Yes, it's symbolic, but it's meant to represent a token of appreciation and recognition for someone who has done things to bring about peace on a worldwide scale. As jfrost mentioned, individuals who have won it aren't always the most spectacular choices(especially considering the Cold War and all), but they've usually already done something. President Obama hasn't really done anything to merit the Nobel Peace Prize, so his being presented with it is troubling, and lessens the value of the award as a whole. And it is supposed to be a major award, because it's supposed to represent the recognition of an individual who has helped advance the human race through peaceful means. Now, in four years, if he has done something to merit it, such as brokering peace deals between the Palestinians and Israelis, then by all means he deserves it. But he hasn't done it yet. And he shouldn't need an award to inspire him to do something great, he's the President of the United States. He's the executive head of a nation. He should be doing things to aide and advance his nation and the world anyway.

Also, consider one of the largest criticisms he's gotten throughout both his campaign and his term: that he's been given a relatively free ride. If anything, this will cement the opinions of his detractors and give them more political ammunition to use against him, which in turn helps to further divide an already divided country.

As for myself, I haven't much cared about the Peace Prize after Al Gore received it, but I do think it's supposed to be worth something. President Obama shouldn't have gotten it. After a major event or his full term, if his record is examined and his work deserves it, then give it to him. But not as some preemptive measure for work he might do.

And no, I didn't vote for him and I don't care for his presidency.

According to CNN, its for this:
The committee said it honored Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
What?

I think its the possibility for him being a black president.

Let me rephrase that to make me not sound racist. Hes the first african american to be elected, i dont see a problem with that at all. And people in Africa went insane when he got in office, so did that count as to unite the international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples?

So far, i got nothing against Obama, hes in a tough situation and trying to do his best with the people that kinda got us into it in the first place. I didnt vote for him but i got nothing against him for being in office, skin color or other wise.

It kinda falls in the same category how Fidel Castro got the Peace prize about a decade ago, which still puzzles us as well. The only way id see him earn it is if Cuba wasnt as crappy as it is now...

You know, ZP is the first thing that came to mind too, but not like others haven't done it before Yahtzee. But still, no need to be hostile about it.
