I really enjoy Psyvariar Complete Edition and Psyvariar 2. Sure its not hard to breeze through the short game shooting everything in sight but when you utitlize the buzz system properly and kill enemies via non shooting but rather ramming, thats when the games are difficult. Its the only way to unlock the extra stages.

Some less known ones
Not necessarily my favorites, but I'd like to mention some decent and not as known games from my Amiga days:
Apidya
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apidya
Project X (I need to try out the sequel on the PS1)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project-X
SWIV (the unofficial (and I believe better) sequel to the side shooter Silkworm - strangely for a sequel goes to be a top down shooter!)
Probably my favorite is Super Stardust, a very good "Asteroids clone"; I hear Super Stardust HD is coming out on the PS Network, so those few of you with PS3 should do well to check it out.
Although, having played Ikaruga I can say it's very, very good (although it's slightly too hard for my liking, although fortunately I can go past level 2 unlike Racketboy
)
Ivo.
