The game devs already made their money off of that game. It is not like someone copied that game for you, thus, denying the game developers the chance to sell one more copy or forcing them to throw another copy in the trash - like burning a CD your friend bought vs. your friend buying a CD and then giving it to you for whatever reason. Downloading a ROM is kind of like downloading an MP3. One person may have bought a song, but than many people get it for free without that original person giving up the right to listen to it.

Actually, there is no difference between buying a used copy and downloading a copy from the perspective of a publisher. Let's look at the sequence of events (let's assume no leak on the downloaded copy).

1. Person buys game in store at release. Publisher gets money.
2. Person either rips the ISO or sells the game back to Gamestop
3. Person 2 either downloads the game or buys the used copy from Gamestop. In both cases the publisher gets nothing.

There is one difference between the two: a used game can only be used by one person at a time, while downloaded copies can be replicated infinitely. So yes, there is a potential that more people aren't buying a new copy of a given game, but for obvious reasons there aren't any hard numbers on the subject. And then there's a fact that Gamestop has built an entire business model around selling used versions of current releases so that they can keep a larger share of the profits from a video game sale.

Or softmod your Wii and add the homebrew channel and/or download VC games from the internet and use them on any Wii you want to. I don't like stealing, but to be honest I fully endorse downloading VC games like that... at least until Nintendo stops being a bitch and lets you transfer VC/WiiWare games onto other Wiis.

did this never happen?

http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/10/02/ ... e-sd-slot/

Nintendo's Satoru Iwata and his company have come up with a solution to the biggest issue for Wii gamers: storage. Iwata announced during the Japan fall press conference that, in the spring of 2009, gamers can expect to have the ability to load and play software direct from your SD card in your SD slot, as well as download items directly to their SD slot. For those of you with more than 2gbs of downloaded goodies, we only have one suggestion: buy a bunch of 2gb SD cards.

Update: Just to clarify, you won't be able to play games direct from the SD card. You'll merely be able to download items directly to it. Sorry for the mixup

The firmware update in the spring lets you download direct to the SD card (and also supports SDHC, so you can get more than 2GB). The menu interface then lets you launch the game off the SDHC, but what it does is load the game into the internal memory and then launch.

You've always had the ability to copy VC games to your SD card, but before this update it was a pain in the ass, since you had to manually copy through the memory management feature and then manually copy back when you wanted to play. This automates the whole thing. The games are still locked to a single Wii, however.

I ran into a problem with the SD launching last week. I wanted the free internet channel, so I downloaded it. I didn't have enough blocks of memory on my Wii, so I moved a couple of my larger WiiWare games to the SD card. After downloading the internet channel to the Wii I only had a couple blocks of memory left on the console itself. A couple days later I tried to open a game from my SD card and it wouldn't load because there was not enough free blocks to move the game from the SD to the HD.

So, yeah you can store games on the SD card and load them, but you need to have the appropriate amount of free memory on the Wii to play them.

Didn't know that, luckily my Wii memory is about 20% used with only a few channels installed like internet, voting, hbc and backup loaders.

Wish you could install wads directly to the SD without going to the wii memory first then copying to SD, but that's just too much lazyness.
