I miss 3rd person shooters.
Duke Nuke'em A Time to Kill is still a blast for me to play. Battlefront is pretty good on 3rd person too.

Max Payne and Max Payne 2 were some of my favorite third person shooters. They did bullet time before it became the "thing" to do. Plus, gotta love that slightly tongue-in-cheek method of storytelling.

Halo 1,2,3,Wars,O.D.S.T there just wasn't enough storyline, and not to start a flame war but I had the PS2 during the XBOX days and played Killzone, Black, Timesplitters 2 and the few other FPS's on the system and I never saw the attraction to halo, it's unrealistic, the graphics are sub-par 1 & 2 and the voice acting, writing, story and the poor excuse for the human models in that game take the cake as probably conveying the worst cutscenes that involve people talking with mouths that move like super fast car compactors. Plus the multitude of Halo fan kids were enough to drive you up a wall, with there stupid stats on how much microshaft made in one week on halo 2, woop dee doo thanks for the multi mill estimate; seriously does the fact that microsoft made millions make me think the game is better than it really is or that it's magically excused from all of the things that we rate games on? I don't think so... But to be fair, graphics-better than Killzone, gameplay great and the strongest point of the game and finally, a storyline that would much rather explain itself in a series of novels than in game (because no one really cares about that do they?) Space marines defend Earth fron an alien force-Very original. And finally, online community and online gameplay, these my friends are the only reasons the Halo series bruned it's way across the XBOX and the market. But hey I could be wrong right?
The gates of Hell,
"Through me is the way into the woeful city; through me is the way into eternal woe; through me is the way among the lost people. Justice moved my lofty maker: the divine Power, the supreme Wisdom and the primal Love made me. Before me were no things created, unless eternal, and I eternal last. Leave every hope, ye who enter!" -Dante

For 3rd person shooters, I recommend Mercenaries (PS2, Xbox), fun as hell.

I don't know if Mercenaries 2 is any good, haven't played it yet.
Systems: Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Genesis 3, Genesis 2, 32X, Sega CD (model 2), Saturn (model 1), Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox (Modded), Xbox 360, GameBoy, GBA SP, Game Gear, PSP... always adding more

I was never able to get into the Mario games on the NES as a kid, after the first few levels I'd get bored with it. Although genesis sonic games I either got to the last level or actually beat them although I was older then so that might have been a factor.

Interestingly, I beat both Mario Land and Zelda on the gameboy and liked both of them more than their NES counterparts. I really don't know why.

I also dislike first person shooters but mainly on consoles because I just never feel I have proper control with a dual analog. I used to have an aversion to fps on pcs too (didn't like wolfenstein, doom or half-life). That changed when I played No One Lives Forever, the two Max Payne games and Mafia.

I really hated GTA: San Andreas mainly because I thought the controls were terrible and the gameplay was uninteresting. Then again I've liked Mafia & Yakuza 2 which are similar sandbox type games so go figure.

Didn't like Gran Turismo or Metal Gear Solid games. However, I really enjoyed MGS: VR Missions.

Never liked rpgs until phantasy star 4 and later ff7, ff9. I hated Neverwinter Nights. In general rpgs are one of my least favorite genres. I do appreciate rpg-like elements in other genres.

I thought that I would really like Devil May Cry 3 but I just found it kind of repetitive and didn't like the fixed camera angles.

I don't get the Metroid Prime games. My friend loves them and tries to get me to play mine, but to me they're just dull.
Some of the environments and music are nice and haunting, but the gameplay itself is what I don't like. You just go from room to room scanning everything, trying to negotiate first-person jumps, and occasionaly and enemy can pop out and you have to lock on and mash 'a' to shoot him

Toss another one on the Halo pile. To be fair, I haven't played the games much. But what I have played of them definitely doesn't warrant the rabid fanboy support the series receives. I'm also old skool in that I firmly believe that a FPS should be played with a keyboard and mouse set up. Microsoft's blatant disallow of KB&M use on their consoles baffles me. This meant that Halo had to be played with a controller. Until that point, NO ONE played FPS with a controller. Other FPSs on other consoles included KB&M support of some kind (usb on the PS2, dedicated peripherals on the Dreamcast). But Halo skyrocketed in popularity and changed all of that. Now there are gamers who firmly believe that a controller is better than a KB&M and mouse combo. It just blows my mind. I blame Halo.

There are lots of controller-only FPS games pre-Halo. Goldeneye, the Doom ports, Zero Tolerance, AvP, etc. In fact, I would guess the reverse is true and that most console FPSs before Halo had NO keyboard/mouse support as there was simply nowhere to plug them in. I thought that the Dreamcast was the first to even offer this option...

What the hell good would a mouse be when you're sitting on a living room couch?

I'm rocking out a mouse and keyboard on my couch right now to post this. I've got my PC hooked into my TV, and a wireless mouse and keyboard. It's awesome. Especially when you consider that modern mice work on basically every surface, so I never have issues of my mouse not being responsive.
