Are you high, or are you just retarded? RE4 upped then ante. The previous entries, barring some accidents (Outbreak, anyone?), were gr8, each better than the one before it. And since RE5 is the absolute best while continuing the tradition, then RE4 must be gr8.MaliceValentine wrote:RE4 is not a horror survival but a lame 3rd person shooter
Survival Horror on the Wii!?

Re: Survival Horror on the Wii!?
While RE 4 was great, its a action game and is far from being a survival horror game. Calling it lame is a bit overboard, as it did do a lot things great and kept the tension level high.
Re: Survival Horror on the Wii!?
Actually, it technically IS a survival horror game. You have to survive hoards of entities that wanna kill you, you can't heal whenever you want and it's in the horror genre. Survival + Horror = Survival Horror.corn619 wrote:While RE 4 was great, its a action game and is far from being a survival horror game. Not every survival horror game has to be like Alone in the Dark or Resident Evil 2. Parasite Eve had RPG-style elements (combat, item management, leveling up, etc), Fatal Frame had the whole camera thing, and F.E.A.R was a FPS with survival in mind.
And personally, while I am an avid zombie nut, RE4 was pretty refreshing. And since they could still think and act like humans, there were a lot harder to deal with. And the over-the-shoulder 3rd Person was IMHO harder than the aiming system in older games. At least in those, if something was gonna sneak up on you, you'd see it better.
Personally, I wish someone would take the Chinese unlicensed Famicom port of Resident Evil and hack the ASM code to make it more functional.
Now... not to sound stupid but... when are they gonna throw some werewolves into Resident Evil? Make them human/wolf hybrids caused by a new strain of the G-Virus (which mutates living cells, whereas the T-Virus just reanimates dead cells).
Re: Survival Horror on the Wii!?
So...Zombies Ate My Neighbors is survival horror? Castlevania is survival horror? Splatterhouse is survival horror? What about DOOM? I think the biggest problem that we're facing is that survival horror is generally a poorly defined genre.REPO Man wrote:Actually, it technically IS a survival horror game. Actually, you can heal whenever you want too. That's the whole problem. I never had a shortage of healing items, or ammo for that matter.REPO Man wrote: Actually, it technically IS a survival horror game. Survival Horror isn't just about "Surviving against Horrors". A Survival Horror game is suppose to leave you with a sense of powerlessness. A sense that there is no way to overcome the odds presented to you - but you try to anyway.
Resident Evil 4 does not have this. What it does have is slow-moving enemies with heads that explode as soon as you sneeze on 'em, enough firepower to put SAS and USMC to shame, and an overflowing supply of gold that makes sure you'll run out of inventory space LONG before you run out of supplies. Oh, and it's pretty much 60% Escort Mission, and 40% Save the Princess.
Look at Silent Hill, Fatal Frame and Siren. All these games have protagonists that are pretty much powerless and have to rely on their wits to survive. Leon doesn't have this problem. Any problem he needs to solve can be solved by using a gun. If that doesn't work - use more gun.
I wouldn't say that RE4 is a lame 3rd Person Shooter. In fact, I think its a really good 3rd Person Shooter. However, it's pretty piss-poor for a Survival Horror game. I honestly think that a better title for Resident Evil 4 would have been "House of the Dead: Off The Rails".

ZAMN, Castlevania and Splatterhouse are exceptions, since they are satirical, gothic, and action-based, respectively.Ack wrote:So...Zombies Ate My Neighbors is survival horror? And DOOM is too frentic.
And how is it a "poorly-defined genre"? It's essential an adventure game with action elements, creepy atmosphere, paranoia-inducing ambiance, and in some cases (there are few that are don't) puzzle-solving.
And I only insult people who I feel insult me. And I felt that calling one of my fave games in one of my fave series a bad game was insulting. And not just to me, but the people who worked hard to make the game, the people who also adapted it to the Wii, and the people who love it.
And as an American, I exercise my First Amendment however much I can and to hell with anyone who says otherwise. Now obviously, I won't insult just anyone. But when I do, know this... I'm not in the wrong here.
Really? Cuz I've had that problem on COUNTLESS occasions.the7k wrote:Actually, you can heal whenever you want too. That's the whole problem. I never had a shortage of healing items, or ammo for that matter.
Let's see... one guy using a limited number of weapons against hundreds of thousands of mutated freaks and psychopathic townspeople, little-to-no places to hide, the threat of running out of ammo to the point of relying on a little wuss knife (what? no machete?), often having to protect a second individual who slows you down and makes surviving impossible, cutscenes that can kill you if you don't do things just right, traps that can only be seen by the most eagle-eyed of players (I've must've stepped in more than my fair share of bear traps and tripwires), and that just being on easy mode... yeah, I'm pretty much powerless. And to add lemon-soaked salt to my wounds, when I'm aiming, my field of vision, already far less than in RE3, decreases.the7k wrote:Survival Horror isn't just about "Surviving against Horrors". Yes it does.the7k wrote:Resident Evil 4 does not have this. Zombies move slow, too.
Again, where is all this abundance of guns and ammo? I'm usually running out in the worst possible times.
And as for gold, I run out of that a lot, too. In some occasions, I think I've even sold grenades just to buy a small amount of ammo.
And what game DOESN'T feature escort missions? It's called "a challenge". If she fought back, it'd be easier and therefore not as fun.
And every game is about saving a "princess", which is either literal (i.e. Super Mario Bros.) or figurative (i.e. your love interest) or even not even a person (i.e. your town, your planet, whatever).
No, it's an INCREDIBLE 3rd Person Shooter.the7k wrote:I wouldn't say that RE4 is a lame 3rd Person Shooter. In fact, I think its a really good 3rd Person Shooter. And how could it ever be called "House of the Dead: Off the Rails" if it doesn't have zombies or bad acting? Granted RE4's acting isn't Oscar-caliber, but at least it's better than some of the cheesetastic lines from RE1.

Wrong answer. On this site, you're actually only operating under the whims of whoever owns it, and one of his rules is: DON'T INSULT OTHER MEMBERS.REPO Man wrote:And as an American, I exercise my First Amendment however much I can and to hell with anyone who says otherwise. I don't care if somebody insults your favorite game. You can defend it all you want. But you DO NOT insult forum members. And don't give me some crap about first amendment rights on the Internet.
In this situation, you are in the wrong. And if Racket or any of his mods deem you to be in the wrong in any other situation, then you're wrong there too. This is not a democracy.
Re: Survival Horror on the Wii!?
I'm all for supporting RE4 as a superb game, but agree that it's more of an action game than survival horror. Leon is a powerhouse who can (and usually does) kill anything that stands in his way. There is some inventory control required, but ammo is plentiful for most of the game and there is no shortage of weapons. When you spend more time fighting and dismembering than running or hiding from enemies, I don't really consider it a survival game. However, it does nail the horror aspect very well, with great atmosphere and set pieces throughout the game... so surely we can all agree that RE4 is a great action-horror title?
But RE5 as the best in the series? Our tastes definitely differ there. RE5 is still a solid game but is the least interesting in the series so far for me. It moves too far away from what I liked about the survival horror genre, without giving me anything new and exciting to replace what's been lost. Co-op gameplay is a fun addition, but blasting through the game *with a buddy* makes it even less creepy than the action-based gameplay in RE4. Oh well... different strokes for different folks.
Also, props to Ack for calling out that first amendment BS while still providing a level-headed reply.
