I throw in another vote for NGPC, as long as you like the games available (the library has some real gems IMO, but it isn't very diverse IMO).

The screen is not bad. It is on-par with GBA's screen for visibility (not for # of colors).

Niode, where did you get all these games - when I was in the U.K. I didn't have an easy time of getting NGPC games (I got both Metal Slugs and Sonic, basically)?
BTW I have (or had - I don't remember if I sold it) a Swan Crystal and don't think it is worth it unless you know Japanese.

The "clicky" stick instead of a regular d-pad has some head-turning potential. Not as much as a Virtual Boy strapped onto your head (see Keith Apicary videos for examples :P).

ngpc library will easily take up a large chunk of time.

they put the polish on their fighters. Tons of replay.

the puzzle games are diverse.
and

there are a handful of action games.

the rpg's are not many, but present.
Dark Arms is a dark pokemon weapon thingy.
Faseli does have an english copy. excellent through and through

So, I was thinking about an NGPC myself. I've done some research and it looks like there's definitely a lot of quality in the game library. Not a big variety of platformers (looks like mainly Sonic and the Metal Slugs), but I'd rather have good fighters anyhow. I was curious about how the systems differ between the "regular" and "slimline" models. Also, are there any variants of the system that are rarer than others? I'll be checking into this for sure. If anyone has any other suggestions or tips on starting with the NGPC, please fire over a reply. Thanks!

There are no "regular" or "slimline" versions of the NGPC. There is one version of the NGPC to my knowledge, and I don't think any color is rarer then another.

You might want to consider getting an atari lynx. Its a great (little) system with a quircky library of games. But with the new flashcart out, a new influx of homebrew is on its way as we speak. I've picked up the task learning some 6502 assembly and do some coding on the little beat. Hardware wise the system is awesome, although a bit weak in the audio department. You can pick one up on ebay or craiglist for dirt cheap most of the time.
