The only thing that jumps out at me on picture #2 is what looks like a brown burnt spot on the board above the chip in the middle. Just to the left of FB507. But that doesn't correspond to the spot where the wire is on the back assuming you flipped the board horizontally to take the other picture.

That bottom modchip wire really looks burnt to me. If the wire was soldered on badly and is barely making contact, it could get hot, burn the board, and possibly cause intermittent issues. Though I'm certainly no expert and I don't have a 1001 to look at myself to compare.
Yea I Flipped it over and double checked if the chip is in the same location. It is just flipped. The front top left of the board is the backs top right. I appreciate the link ill read over it when I get a chance. If you all think it isnt totally destroyed I might just remove the mod and look for other ways to play back ups if I even want to do that anymore.

I basically traded for this so I didn't have to risk messing up my playstation games that are valuable and I didn't want to do emulation plus it gives my kids something to play with so that I don't have to worry about them destroying my games lol.

Its getting late here so I will have to get back with you all in the morning and thank you all for your help.

Sometimes the games load straight up although they are laggy on the FMVs and I get 5 to 10 min load times between screens till you finally get the game goin and then from there its normal.. Sometimes they get to one screen and never load.

What do you suggest to do as how to clean it good. I am a novice at this although I am pretty good at fixing the Nes :)

Yes the Suikoden 2 game was tested in 5501 model playstation

i was just asking if you cleaned it...i personally like rubbing alcohol(low water content) with the q-tip

to me it sounds like its just the lense...but it does look like a shitty mod(solder joints look ok,just burnt wires and badly burnt board),personally depending on the nes games id be getting my fucking games back(cussing emphasizes how pissed id personally be) if it was just random crappy games i wouldn't worry about it

you can get a pro action replay or a boot disk and just swap them with your 5501(since it has the i/o port) and you can probley get it for 5 bucks(i bought one for my 1001 over 10 years ago for 15 on ebay) its not as convenient as the chip

but if there is no other option i suggest you start looking for a lens replacement or a drive replacement

it could be pretty hard to find the proper lense close to 15 years after that system was released, ebay had a few but most of them were for the PSone....if you have the proper skills that chip might be compatible with your 5501
Could I put the 5501 lens in the 1001? Should I try cleaning the burnt places with a qtip and rubbing alchohol?

Yea and the Nes games I trade were about 13 nes games and 5 genesis games for this playstation and 40 backup games and with the impression that one of the games was a real copy of xmen vs streetfighter.. While at the meeting place looking it over I really didnt think it was a real copy plus the guy forgot the multitap thing that he at first said was a sega saturn multap. I get the game home and compare it to pictures online and not only is it a japanese copy of the game, but its also a freaking back up copy with the box art for the cd art.

The nes and Genesis games if you were to sell them and get the average value of the games then they were somewhere around $ 100 in value I believe. The games are Robowarrior,Double Dragon 1 & 2, Donkey Kong Classics,Micro Machines,Ninja Turtles 1 and 2, Jaws, Elevator Action, Dr Mario, Nightmare on Elm Street,Castlequest,Galaga, Super Mario/ Duckhunt. The Genesis games were just sports games that I didn't care much for....Lol this guy at first wanted my entire nes collection for this which is around 40-50 REAL Games

I was basing my entire trade on those two items being real and actually brought with him, but I traded anyway because I am a nice guy and already drove an hr and half to get this crap, but this won't happen again lol. I was rewarded later for my being too nice :) I bought 30 games from someone else for $5 each. I got a huge stack of playstation RPGs for $5 ea including the NM Suikoden 2.

I wouldn't try and swap lasers. I would pick up a 7501 model and just swap mod chips.

Why do you recommend the 7501 model? Is it the best or one of the best models?

If it's burnt, its burnt. Maybe it could be resoldered with the burnt bit of wire removed if the trace isn't too damaged on the board and the other spot cleaned up. If no components were burned, which I can't see any it might behave. Would take someone who knows modding a 1001 actually looking at to tell I think though.

Unfortunately it does seem you got screwed, but at least the later purchase made up for it. I always try to make sure I can test a local swap to make sure things work. I'm always wary when someone has a system for sale cheap but no cords. I ask if I can bring cords along to check it out. If they say no or won't let you test, just walk away unless its so cheap its work the gamble to maybe need fixing.

It's probably the best model. It's said to have the same laser as the 9001, which is suppose to be the best laser found in a PS1. The only real difference between the 7501 and the 9001 is the removal of the one port used for a Game Shark. I don't use a Game Shark, I just like keeping my options open. If you don't care about that port than I'd say go for either one.

I have a 7501, and that port is nice since it meant I could use an addon device and not have to open it up and install a modchip for playing backups.

Hobie I usually do that very thing and by my own nature I really don't trust people from the get go. I walked away from this trade in email ,but he was very persistant which usually sets off my scammer/ripoff alarms ,but Im not 100% sure he was ripping me off on purpose just because of how dumb he sounded, but maybe it was all a act. He claims hes goin to send me some stuff to make up for it, but I will believe it when i see it lol.

It was my first trade dealing with Japanese games and backup games but this xmen vs street fighter game would convince anyone that had no idea what the game suppose to look like to be real. It has been a good learning experience and I really didn't have much real cash into the games that i traded him like $1 - $2 ea. Next time I will ask for better pictures of the things im interested in before trading.

Does anyone know If i removed the modchip off this model if it may behave better?

Thanks everyone. I think I will look into getting a game shark to play backups of my games that I don't want to mess up and it will be such a big relief to have something I can let my kids play without worrying about the damage they cause lol..

Alex I dealt with him on Craigslist met him outside of Atlanta. I will post his email and his real name (If it is his real name) if you all think it would be wise to do so if he doesn't try to make this right. So far I haven't heard anything from him since I called him later that day after I tested out his stuff. He emailed me back that night to so if anything he felt guilty lol.. I don't expect anything and I have moved on about the loss. I am still looking into getting a game enhancer or gameshark to play the backups and my own personal copies of games I value. So if anyone has one that actually plugs into a playstation pm me please :)

I stay pretty busy so its mostly for my kids ,but honestly I have a blast tracking down this stuff and doin all the trading/buying/selling and playing when I get time to play.
