Modded Playstation SCPH-1001 Need Help Please

Post by Peachy Gaming »

Alright today I traded some Nes games for a Modded playstation one Scph-1001 and heres the problem. The games take forever to load and some legit copies of games don't even load up past the playstation screen. Is the laser bad/goin bad or is the mod causing this trouble. Does anyone have a idea on how to fix this?

So far I think I got totally ripped off on this trade but on a positive note I bought 30 games for $5 each from someone else that included Suikoden 2 and other valuable Playstation and Xbox games :D Below is a picture of the mod I think.

This is the Front in the same general area

have you tried cleaning it? have you tried the games that don't work in a different playstation?

this model was my first playstation towards the end of its life it didnt want to read games that had any scratches basically...and for some reason it would only take certain off brand memory cards or the controller port wouldn't work

if im not mistaken this models read speed is only 1 or 2x and depending on the game some are notorious for long load times(this was the first playstation released in the us)

how do the copied games load?

I did try in another Playstation. I used the original copy of Suikoden 2 in the modded Playstation and didn't get past the ps logo system screen. I took it out and put it in my other Playstation worked first time no pause or anything.

AS you can see I tore the entire thing apart and the Mod job looks like crap to me , but im not an expert at this and haven't done mods and I really don't see the mod chip. Those chips suppose to be there I believe.

Uh, that looks like there's some fried stuff on the board. The wire at the bottom looks burnt, as does the board ½ inch to the left of where it connects. The small 8 pin chip right above that looks to have a burnt spot to the right of it as well. Look at those spots on the opposite side of the board, are there any fried components?

*edit

All those grey wires go to the mod chip which will be under the tape.

Could I replace it with a new faster laser if I wanted to improve load times? Hmm I wonder if I could use the laser out of my other playstations..

you didn't answer my other 2 questions, but i doubt the chip has anything to do with the issue, if there was something wrong with the mod i highly doubt it would function period or it wouldn't load back ups

and by other playstation you mean normal run of the mill playstation,or psone,or ps2 or ps3

a copy of suikoden 2 that i had that was pretty much demolished, it wouldn't run in my ps1 but ran fine in my ps2 and ps3

as far as replacing the laser goes you might be able too,but if you just try to swap out the unit it might not work out so well, they are placed in different positions on certain models and if you try to place it on the board it wont fit properly

Alex I cleaned the laser with a Q-tip and blowed some air into but nothing major and the games usually don't load it goes into the screen with the memory card manager and cd manager and randomly loads then sometimes. Sometimes the games load straight up although they are laggy on the FMVs and I get 5 to 10 min load times between screens till you finally get the game goin and then from there its normal.. Sometimes they get to one screen and never load.

What do you suggest to do as how to clean it good. I am a novice at this although I am pretty good at fixing the Nes :)

Yes the Suikoden 2 game was tested in 5501 model playstation

Wiki page says SCPH-1001 has FMV issues.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Playstation#Variants

The only thing that jumps out at me on picture #2 is what looks like a brown burnt spot on the board above the chip in the middle. Just to the left of FB507. But that doesn't correspond to the spot where the wire is on the back assuming you flipped the board horizontally to take the other picture.

That bottom modchip wire really looks burnt to me. If the wire was soldered on badly and is barely making contact, it could get hot, burn the board, and possibly cause intermittent issues. Though I'm certainly no expert and I don't have a 1001 to look at myself to compare.

i was just asking if you cleaned it...i personally like rubbing alcohol(low water content) with the q-tip

to me it sounds like its just the lense...but it does look like a shitty mod(solder joints look ok,just burnt wires and badly burnt board),personally depending on the nes games id be getting my games back because it wouldn't be worth the trouble of hunting a lens or a drive to replace it, if it was just random crappy games i wouldn't worry about it, but if they wont trade back just take the loss and try to find a lens...unless you knew about the condition..then you sorta have to take the loss(which i assume you didnt)

you can get a pro action replay or a boot disk and just swap them with your 5501(since it has the i/o port) and you can probley get it for 5 bucks(i bought one for my 1001 over 10 years ago for 15 on ebay) its not as convenient as the chip

but if there is no other option i suggest you start looking for a lens replacement or a drive replacement

it could be pretty hard to find the proper lense close to 15 years after that system was released, ebay had a few but most of them were for the PSone....if you have the proper skills that chip might be compatible with your 5501
