I have some very fond memories of Donkey Kong on the Coleco Vision.

For the Atari, I loved Yar's Revenge and Q-bert back in the day. Q-bert remains a very fun game. Yar's has aged a bit. If you want to get a little history on the horror genre of games, then you should play Haunted House. I can't believe I ever thought it was spooky, but when you're a kid, you can put a lot of imagination into those fat Atari pixels. I suppose if you have a REALLY good imagination, you might even like the shower scene in the Porky's game.

I was a Colecovision kid though, so I know that system best. Your obvious choices are Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Frogger. Their simply gameplay is still enjoyable, especially if you're into trying to get high scores.

Zaxxon was a Sega game on the Colecovision that was ahead of its time. It's a shooter that laid the blueprint for later games like Viewpoint.

Ladybug is a variation on Pac Man that includes revolving doors, which surprisingly is a simple addition that adds a lot of depth to the game that is quite addicting. My mom, who never really liked videogames, would stay up all hours of the night playing Lady Bug.

When I was a kid I remember the game Space Fury had actual voices, which was like the coolest thing ever back then. It's kind of an asteroids style game- good fun.

I also like Popeye. It has a simple charm to it- avoid Bluto and catch Sweet Pea's falling hearts. It's sort of like Donkey Kong with spinach instead of hammers and a fat jerk instead of a big ape.

Venture was one of my favorite's back then, but I doubt it has aged well. But it is like an early generation multi-directional shooter.

And then there's Smurf, which is a crappy game, but is notable for being the only game where you can be insta-killed by a tuft of grass.

I really enjoy Stampede on the 2600. That game is awesome.

Thanks for the game suggestions. Is there a more comfortable controller alternative to the Colecovision and Intellivision? I've heard bad things about their controllers and I don't want something like that to hinder my enjoyment of the games.

Forget those sprite-based consoles. Get yourself a Vectrex.

Three of my favorite games ever have always been Seaquest, Defender and RiverRaid for the 2600. I've tried quite a few games for the different consoles of that era, but those are the only ones that really hooked me. I think with the Activision ones it's the steerable bullets that make them so much fun. I can play Seaquest for hours and it never gets dull. It still amazes me how they made such an enjoyable game with so little to work with. Luckily they've made Activision Anthology for nearly every console so I nearly always have it with me. My brother and I spent a 14 hour road trip taking turns playing it on my PS2 hooked up to his car's in-dash DVD player.

You can plug in a genesis, master system, or atari 2600 controller into the Coleco vision. There are 2 main games I remember from the atari 2600, combat and moon patrol. Those are fun games.

Unfortunately not, they're hardwired. Plus they're actually a disc directional pad that registers 16 directions, not 4 or 8. Plus there's the fact that there are 2 fire buttons on each side and the number pad.

There are these things though:

They controller plugs right into an RCA input and the games are stored within the controller itself. You can't add new games is the only problem.
