When I was in Ireland I really wished I could have gone to a hurling match. I knew nothing of the game before I went (a year ago at this time) but found it pretty interesting. Looks like a great game.
There is a September tournament in Tokyo. The first day of matches is on September 13 and runs until Sept. 27 (Sunday to Sunday). There is also one in November in Fukuoka (southern Japan near Nagasaki like 12 hours from Tokyo) from November 15 - November 29th (also Sunday to Sunday)

If you do go to Sumo, here is what I would recommend. In the start of the day are just the amateur matches, but if you don't know anything about Sumo and don't know any names, they're just as fun. Most people arrive in late afternoon for the best matches, so most of the really good seats up front are empty all day. So what you want to do is arrive at the ticketbooth at 8am (or as soon as it opens) and buy the cheapest ticket they have. These are the nosebleed seats and they sell quick, but you'll never actually be there. Then go out have breakfast/lunch, go out see a site or two and come back around 11 or something. Once you are in the venue just go down to the best/closest seats you see available. If the ticket holder shows up just move back. No one will give you any problems at all. We were in these booths of 4 all day, kind of like box seating. We were close up and had an incredible time watching the matches.

OK! Just booked our tickets to Japan! The two of us are flying from Kansas City to Tokyo (via LAX) for just over $1400 total, including taxes. Fares are crazy cheap.

Now we just have to fill in the details of what we're going to do when we get there. Still want to go to that baseball game, but the season ends Sept. 30. We're flying in Sept. 29...

Crazy cheap in September, anyway. Try flying mid-August, from Japan at least. Crazy expensive.

The 2009 baseball season ends on Oct. 5th, not Sept. 30th. Were you just looking at one specific team's schedule? There are four pro teams in the Tokyo area; Giants, Swallows, Marines and Lions. In the Tokyo area, you can catch the Marines at the Lions at the Seibu Dome on Oct. 1st. That's the last game in the Tokyo area. Catch a game during your first main day in Tokyo, if that's where you're going first. Seibu Dome is about 30-45 mins. from the central areas of Tokyo by train/subway in Tokorozawa City (Seibu Yurakucho subway line or Seibu private lines). Book as soon as possible. The Lions are a popular team and it's the last game of the season at Seibu Dome.

The only baseball team worth watching are the Rakuten Eagles.
