Woo hoo! Bionic Commando: Rearmed just went up on Steam for $10 bucks today! Even better than Direct2Drive!J T wrote: I like the idea of retro remakes, but I haven't played very many. I think my next retro remake purchase will be Bionic Commando: Rearmed (PC), but I'm hoping it will come down $5 or $10 dollars. What are some of your favorites that you would recommend?

Seconding Another World remake. Nice rerelease. I bought it a while back and spent quite a bit of time messing around with the visuals. There's a hi-res mode but the game still looks great in its original state. Can't beat rotoscope.

Thanks for the replies everyone, but especially Anapan who appears to have invested a bit of time and thought into the post.
I'm downloading "Another Planet" now. I used to love Out of This World and Flashback back in the day.

Yeah, Thexder is sweet. Platformer and Shmup in one. In the remake you can turn into a tank too. Fire Hawk: Thexder the 2nd was maybe the third game I ever played on my first PC that I didn't type in BASIC myself out of magazines. That, along with Digger, Digdug, Alley Cat, and Aldo's Adventure.
What's Another Planet?
Heh, actually, I just went through my games folder on my laptop and google-imaged the pics in - took no time - infact I'm gonna dig up some off my OQO now (with links this time!).
Dune 2000 was a pretty good remake of Dune 2 (PC).

Tempest 2000 was really good (Atari Jaguar/PC).

Echoes is a really bright remake of Asteroids (PC)

Robocop 2D 1&2 have some really well done pixel-art (PC)

3D Snake Arena (the older version is better) is a 3D remake of Pizza Worm with mouse control (PC).

Plasma Worm is closer to Nibbles.

Zombie Smashers X is a remake of River City Ransom but with zombies.

Doomsday/Jdoom - with this engine and addons Doom can look very impressive.

Krypton Egg is the best breakout clone I have found.

Ys Complete/Eternal remade Ys 1&2 for Windows.

Space Invaders Extreme is so fun - especially multiplayer (GBA/DS).

Crashday and Ultimate Stunts are remakes of Stunts. Crashday didn't quite het it right, and Ultimate Stunts didn't work right on my computers. Trackmania is heavily influenced by Stunts too.

This topic is awesome!

The Goonies 20th Anniversary Edition is a decent remake and like the best things in life it is for free.

Re: What are the best retro gaming remakes?
For those of you with Bionic Commando Rearmed I have a question. Can the multiplayer be played decently with a joystick and only two buttons? I am only guessing that you do not have an inventory/weapon change in multiplayer so it would only nix grenade, right?
The reason I ask is because my arcade cabinet is almost done and it seems like it would be an awesome four player game for it, but each player only has a joystick and two action buttons (not counting coin and start).

The remakes of Kings Quest 1 & 2 were amazingly true to the originals in both story and graphical styling (Of Kings Quest 5)
Kings Quest

Kings Quest 2

The recent Monkey Island remake was not a bad remake at all, but the original is still more enjoyable, to me at least
The Secret of Monkey Island

The Final Fantasy remake have been pretty impressive across the board, I also thought that Super Mario All-Stars was an awesome remake.

I agree about the Final Fantasy remakes-- at least for FF1 and FF2 on the GBA. They were both easier than their original counterparts, but in the case of FF2 that made things more enjoyable, imo.emwearz wrote: The Final Fantasy remake have been pretty impressive across the board, I also thought that Super Mario All-Stars was an awesome remake.
The fan VGA remake of Maniac Mansion was also pretty good. I thought the art style was very appropriate. However, I did encounter one mistake--
<spoiler alert!!!!!!!>
When I played through it, I found the audio cassette and put it into the tape deck. It played the tentacle mating call even though I did not copy it onto the tape yet.

I forgot about this thread!
I'd like to retract my previous statements about Thexder 95, I actually found my old copy and tried it out. It sucks.
