Though, as someone who played MGS3 first, the downgrade in controls kind of made it hard to play MGS:TS
Why did you start with 3?
In his defence, seeing as it comes first chronologically, it does kind of make sense.
Stay calm, but the first one I played was Sons of Liberty!
So did I, unwisely. I ended up really badly wanting the first one after that so I could understand the story. 2 is probably the worst game in the series to start with.

PS2's often have trouble reading PSX games as well as PS2 games with the blue undersides. (The earliest PS2 games.) It's not unheard of - in fact, I have a few friends who have their PS1s hooked up at all times for that very reason.
Nostalgia and fanboy loyalty have a lot to do with which version of the game people prefer. When the PS version came out, it was revolutionary... but a lot of time has passed and expectations are higher now than what they were then.
I personally think that someone new to the Metal Gear Solid series is better off playing the Twin Snakes version. It's not a perfect update, and goes over the top with some cutscenes... but anyone concerned about realism in a MGS game should just forget the series before starting. The update does get more right than wrong, and will probably be more accessible for people who didn't grow up playing PS (and earlier) games.
