Why do most people say MGS1 is better on PS1?

Post by BoringSupreez »

I own MGS: TTS for GCN, and I think it's great. Being able to shoot in first person like in MGS2 takes away a lot of the annoying frustration that the original version had, so why do most people claim this game is better on PS1?

Because nerds hate change. Simple as that.

Man where do i start.....the atmosphere, cutscenes, and the overall feel of the game is better.Plus,MGS was such an amazing game when it came out and it still is.I bought a gamecube just for twin snakes the day it was released. It is a good remake but, when things like snake riding a hind D rocket i wanted to puke. The original treated snake like a real person who was only capable of things a real soldier would do.Twin snakes took the realism out of snakes actions in my opinion but, it was a different teams take on a classic game and i respect that.oh and different voice actors for certain characters I did not dig.

haven't played the original beyond the tank, but for me it was the mario and yoshi dolls that killed the mood

Those dolls wouldn't be so annoying if the camera didn't force you to take a big fat long look during the cutscenes in that room.

There were definitely a lot of unnecessary changes to the original game, which were annoying and hurt the atmosphere. On the other hand, The changes made to the actual gameplay were usually pretty good, most notably the first person shooting. I also personally felt that the use of an analogue stick to control Snake was way better. So, 6 of one, half a dozen of another.

My feelings are that when you were that at the time, it was a huge deal.

It's kind of like music. We've all heard, say, Sgt. Pepper. Now, imagine it's 1967 and you hear A Day In The Life for the first time. There's nothing like it, and you feel like you're part of a cultural phenomenon. This shared experience colors our perception and it is completely different to look back at it through nostalgic eyes...

When you were there, in the moment, it was absolutely eye opening to what games could be. To me, MGS was the first game that was cinematic - and now they all are.

MGS sowed the seeds of games as art (sure, there were games that looked good, told a good story and so on years before MGS) and we're only now realizing the potential for the total immersive gaming experience.

As soon as I saw the first Matrix-inspired cut-scene in Twin Snakes, I was immediately turned off.

But most importantly, there was the fact that you could go first person. While this was great in all the sequels, all the sequels were built to deal with Snake being able to shoot anywhere. MGS1 was not, and when you put MGS2 features into MGS1 without making significant changes to the game to deal with this ability - you end up with a broken experience. Rooms that were originally very tough to get through undetected are now laughably easy, with the once formidable Genome soldiers reduced to corpses or comatose bodies in a matter of seconds.

THAT is the problem with Twin Snakes. What was once a suspenseful game that made you more paranoid than cautious was reduced to a walk in the park.

I own both versions on GCN and PS and still prefer the original mainly due to nostalgia... 8)

The gamecube version just feels like such a generic title, in modern times, while the original MGS felt much more special. I didn't spend much time with Twin Snakes but I enjoyed the original very much.
