What do you think the next Nintendo portable will be?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Sure, that's why the DSi works with GB and GBA games. :?

I want it to be a new Gameboy system, but it will probably be more like a DS 2.

The reason flashcarts are so popular on the DS isn't just because the games can be obtained for free, but also because you can carry round 20-odd games with you at the same time.
Why force us to carry around 20 individual cartridges when the same amount of data can fit on a micro SD card the size of my fingernail?
The problem with download-only is that it kills the second hand and collector markets in years to come.

I only bought an original Gameboy a few years back, and am still picking up cartridges for it. If current-gen portables go download-only, you won't be able to do the same in 10-20 years when their respective online stores get shut down.

IF (if because it probably won't happen yet) Nintendo wants to go back to one screen they will probably need a transition system, like Gameboy Micro, which DSi already seems like. Gameboy Micro could only play GBA games and DSi can only play DS games. With this in mind, I think the next system will not be another DS (well DS original) but at least a DS 2.

If you think about it, DS is a pretty lame name, DS just stands for Dual Screen so the DS lite is Dual Screen Lite, and the DSi is Dual Screen i, which is not catchy at all. It's not even like dual screens are a new thing, Nintendo used to make dual screen Game and Watches. I think Gameboy Touch would have worked a bit better, I mean, the touch screen is the new and most important feature, not the dual screens.

The "touch" buzzword has only really been popular the last two years or so. The problem for Nintendo is they need to use a term that Joe Public is familiar with for he current-gen tech.

"DS" obviously covers the existing product, which started in 2004. They can't really change that name now for this product line. The "i" was popularised by Apple with their iEverything (iMac, iPod, iTunes...) approach, and along with the "eBlah" fad before it, is generally intended to promote some sort of Internet-capable device (with "Internet" meaning different things to different companies - from actually browsing the web to just providing online content via a store).

When "DS" was initially chosen, Nintendo wanted to move away from the "boy" in "Gameboy". The whole GBA marketing was "the boy has grown up", and it was pretty clear Nintendo didn't want the GBA (nor the DS) to be seen as a "boys only" toy. That is pretty obvious when you see who the DS is marketed at these days, with the majority of TV commercials featuring middle aged women and/or couples.

Most of the time I find marketing a load of horse shit. Although it's semi-interesting to see why companies choose particular names for their products, most people on these forums are more likely to buy based on the tech itself. I would have bought a DS whether it was called "touch" or "steaming pile of turd" for that matter.

That's not really a problem to Nintendo though, as they make no money out of the second hand market anyway.
In fact, without the second hand market, people are forced to spend money on new consoles instead.

I completely agree with this. Nintendo deliberately didn't make the DS a new generation of Game Boy because the "Game Boy" sounds like something that only plays games, and is only operated by boys.

I'm going to let you guys in on something, I have insider info on the next nintendo handheld. It is called the Nintendo Chai and is shaped like a teacup. It includes a spoonylus that you use to stir the tea. All games will have tea stirring sensitivity. The strategy of adopting new players worked but the players weren't old enough. The Nintendo Chai will solve that problem. 80-90 year old women everywhere will adopt this system. Hardcore nintendo lovers will buy it because it is made by nintendo. Everyone else will buy it because it comes with cookies.

Yeah, true. And with Nintendo embracing emulation pretty heavily, I'm guessing they're looking at making first-hand dollars out of second-hand titles as well.

I remember when Sony (very briefly) announced that PS3 games would have a small writable sector on the optical drives that would bind a disc to a console, and never let the end user resell games again (unless the whole console+games bundle was sold together). Public feedback was obviously horrendous, and Sony withdrew the statement and the idea.

It seems all of these modern "download only" games are a more subtle way of achieving the same idea.
