And by next, I don't mean a slight upgrade like a DSi, I mean like from GBA to DS.
I kinda hope they go back to the Gameboy, and make it single screen again. I really like the DS, but it doesn't carry the same charm as Gameboy.
Nintendo is usually innovative in the way they make their systems, so a DS 2 type thing wouldn't give them much innovation, it would look just like a DS, there are only so many ways you can make a 2 screen console.
I also really hope the next Nintendo handheld can play the old games again. I was annoyed when the DS couldn't play old Gameboy games and really annoyed when I heard the DSi didn't even have GBA game support.
I like the clamshell design, it makes me not worry about the screen being scratched. So that would be nice for a future system.
I really don't want them to go download only, like with the PSP Go, I love collecting games, and nintendo always made cool cartridges, even the DS chips are pretty cool.
So, what do you guys/girls think Nintendo will do for their next portable?

Honestly I expect something that essentially is a DS 2. Similar to how the GBA was just a more powerful Game Boy Color, I expect the DS 2 to be a more powerful DS. Substantially more powerful, like the difference between the Gamecube and the N64.

Nintendo seem to be putting a lot of effort into new ways to control games, rather than raw CPU grunt. The DSi's camera is pretty much a gimmick at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if their next handheld extends on that, as well as the whole "touch" concept (perhaps multi-touch, as everything else is going?).

I think they will make it more of a hand-held for browsing and calendar.
I am not sure why any one hates download games, you can carry like a thousand games in the same case, instead of carrying 3 bags full of games (its for on the go ,right?) .
It is also nice to have a physical copy but just as an option.
I think it will still be DS, but not 2. I think in the hand-held world its like DS-HD or DS Super. maybe a Wii DS!!
But I think that is centuries away. Think of how long the gameboy brand was around before they quit on it, to its lifetime the DS is still a child before we see something revolutionary.

I'm the opposite - I really hope they go download only, or at least give us the option.futuramaguy42 wrote:

The reason flashcarts are so popular on the DS isn't just because the games can be obtained for free, but also because you can carry round 20-odd games with you at the same time.
Why force us to carry around 20 individual cartridges when the same amount of data can fit on a micro SD card the size of my fingernail?
Re: What do you think the next Nintendo portable will be?
Very True. Every game I own I've got on my M3 Simply and R4 (yeah, I've got two... one for each DS!). If I'm not playing any RPGs, it's usually Mario Kart, Tetris, Puzzle Bobble or Puyo-Puyo... all games I really do own copies of (or a rom and an emulator, which I usually own a hard copy of the game for as well). I use a flash cart instead of the actual cartridges because of the very reason you mentioned, although I really do like having hard copies of things.Incognito D wrote:The reason flashcarts are so popular on the DS isn't just because the games can be obtained for free, but also because you can carry round 20-odd games with you at the same time.

Obviously, the next step after the DS is the TS. That's right, three screens!
I wouldn't be surprised if they went download only. After all, it's hard to make a flash cart if there's no cartridge slot.

I like download only, but I also like having an actual game in the system. I don't have a DSi (not sure if I will get one, I like DS games but I also really like having a GBA game in the system, I still have a DS Phat), but I wonder if the games you download to your SD card will work on the next DS. DS virtual console would make it much more worth it.kingmohd84 wrote:I think they will make it more of a hand-held for browsing and calendar.

I don't particularly want to get a R4 type thing, I heard they can break your systems. The owner of the game store I go to showed me a pile of DS's that were all bricked by R4's. He also said one guy actually got 2 DS's bricked.
