Am I the only one who hates new FPS's?

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

I just can't really get into Halo, Haze, HL2 (even though the story was what kept me playing, the game wasn't that fun) and a few others that I can't even remember.

To me, the idea of a fun FPS starts with basic Wolfenstein and ends with Quake 3 and the Unreal Tournament series. Theres something about Doom, Powerslave, Quake, Duke, Unreal Tournament, Blood, Decent, and several others that just get me hooked into it.

Is it because new games are easier? I have built myself to the point where I just slaughter through Nightmare difficulty on Doom like its a lazy sunday drive (and more recently Doom 2, just now getting started on master levels. BRING IT ON BITCHES  )

edit: The music on the old games is 1000x better too

I just can't stand new FPS's all that much. Maybe because its a much more simple, practice and win style of game.I have no clue, I'm just rambling here thinking about why I can't seem to enjoy new games and the big genre that pops up is action games, perticularily FPS's. Maybe its the fact that its no questions asked blow shit up and watch the gore fly down. Even Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament wear me down a bit, sure they are good, but Doom deathmatch is the best multiplayer I have found (at least before I could slaughter everybody).

So after all that useless rambling I'd like to hear your answer. Are you a fan of new FPS's? Or do you like to kick it old school with some Duke and the like?

No.

I don't hate new FPS's, but they don't interest me that much. The problem is that they're all starting to feel repetitive and uninspired. The real issue I have is the total shift away from individual play, most people don't bother and just head straight to xbox live, and I can't stand xbox live, because any time I try to play an FPS on it I get murdered. Seriously, I beat all 3 Ninja Gaidens but I can't for my life get good at an FPS. Most modern FPS's story mode can just be beaten in a day, anyway. The other issue is that any time I do like an FPS, it's got interesting side elements to it (Bioshock).

The new FPS's are good for multiplayer, but the 1P adventure modes they have bug me sometimes.

I haven't truly played an FPS in years.

Pretty much the factors that keep me from enjoying most modern FPS'es are 1) Overly sensitive controls, 2) My indescribable hate for FPS online douchebags, 3) Too much brown, 4) Recovering health, 5) Generic duck and cover gameplay mechanics that never evolve or improve the concept.

I'm loving Bioshock right now. I like the roleplay adventure elements they integrated into the FPS style.
I think Left4Dead is a brilliant co-op game because of the different attributes of the enemies.
Team Fortress 2 is a brilliant multiplayer game because of the different attributes of the characters on the teams.
Unreal Tournament III Black is a little cheesy with all of the muscleheads, but the twitchy high paced game play is fantastic.

I loved Doom and Wolfenstein back in the day, but I'm loving the new stuff too. I guess I don't agree with you.

I don't hate new FPS's, though I have no desire to play them... Other than the occasional bit of Halo 3 whenever a few friends come over, that's always a lot of fun.

No, you're not the only one.

I knocked over Max Payne (technically not a FPS, but whatever) in 7 hours on hardest difficulty. That pissed me off big time. I think the only FPS I paid for since then was Unreal Tournament 2004.

I haven't gone back to the genre since then. There's a distinct lack of originality across the whole thing. Even popular games like Left 4 Dead didn't excite me, as at the end of the day it's the same routine (although the difficulty deserves mention, as it's finally a difficult game, but it's still rinse-and-repeat gameplay).

It's a bit like 2D platform games in the mid 90's. Once the world reached saturation point of new ideas, everything was just rinse and repeat. Minor tweaks here and there in game engines and eye candy aren't enough to keep me interested after 10+ years of the same old stuff. (Although I'm still playing Street Fighter, so go figure...)

I have to say that I despise console FPS games. The only exceptions I have to that rule are the Metroid Prime series, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and TimeSplitters. After being introduced to the FPS genre with Unreal Tournament on a PC there is no going back to joysticks for me. I have tried to get into the Halo series and other console FPS games with friends but they usually just frustrate/bore me. I also feel that the innovation in the genre has stalled... I liked when you had to watch your health instead of hiding behind something waiting for it to recharge.

One game that stood out for me was Unreal Tournament 2004. The weapons were basically the same/refined (with a few new ones thrown in) but the movement was what sold the game for me. You had double jumps, wall jumps, dodge jumps, and other combinations of movement that really set it apart from anything else out there. I was disappointed when UT 3 came out because the movement and pace of the game was slowed down and made easier.

Right now I frequently play 2 online FPS games for the PC. They are Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2. Neither of these games would stand up in single player (TF 2 doesn't even have single player) but they are excellent multiplayer FPS games. Team Fortress 2 has a cartoon art style that stands out from the typical realistic FPS look. It also offers up heaps of gameplay with 9 different classes, tons of gametypes and maps, and it is still being updated with new weapons and maps to this day. Left 4 Dead has a decidedly unique feel to it and is a pretty intense game (you MUST play with people who have microphones or you miss out a lot on the experience). Versus in that game can get hectic and crazy, but it is ultimately rewarding playing as special zombies killing people :)

There was a very huge shift in the style of FPS's when HL1 came out. The arena shooters (UT and Q3) maintained the same style, but after HL1 hit we started to get the more "realistic" shooters. The Doom, Quake, Duke 3D shooters were very over-the-top and all about simple monsters who's difficulty was based soley on health and weaponry. Then HL1 hit with it's marines, who were far more impressive AI-wise than anything that had come before, and we started to see a shift. The weapons became more like real weapons, with no more fast-firing rocket launchers, and the enemies started to get real AI. We did have Serious Sam as a throwback, but I personally felt the sequel was a disappointment. So I wonder if your distaste with modern FPS's might be related to the shift in style.
