What sucks about Sonic Gems Collection is that the version of Sonic CD included on the disc is a buggy port of the PC version, not the original SEGA CD version.

EDIT: Fixed spelling.

Can I control whether I get the bad one or is it just random?

You have to destroy the two machines that turn animals into Badniks scattered in the Past and Future stages.

So destroying the machines will give me access to the easier versions of the levels?

Also, the special stages are pretty dire. How the hell do I attack the UFOs and where are the rings that I can apparently collect?

Talking about it makes me wanna go home and play it, give it another try but all I have is the GC gems collection. Is it a big diffrence from the SCD original? (i know you mentioned bugs but having not played the original, I can't tell)

If you destroy the machines in the PAST levels, you make for better FUTURE levels. You have control over going back and forth between the PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE levels. If I recall correctly, you need to destroy the machines in all the PAST levels to get the good ending of the game.
