Favorite OSTs

Post by Syndicate »

So I spend quite a bit of time listening to video game soundtracks when I'm working, studying, and etc. I still don't own too many, but my favorites are generally from the 16-bit era especially the Genesis games that show what the system can really do. A lot of the more modern soundtrack work is really good as well. Thinking over soundtracks that stay in rotation are:

Classic
  • Streets of Rage 1 & 2
  • E-SWAT
  • Revenge of Shinobi
  • Shinobi III
  • F-Zero
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Donkey Kong Country 1 - 3
  • Thunder Force III - V
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Super Mario World
  • Megaman 1 - 8
  • Megaman X - X4
  • Bloodlines
  • Symphony of the Night
Modern
  • Shovel Knight
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
  • Hollow Knight
  • Dragon Age Inquisition
  • Megaman 9 - 11
  • Dust: An Elysian Tail
  • Skyrim
  • Streets of Rage 4
  • Dustforce
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
...anyone else have any favorites? I'd like to get to the point of actually buying OSTs but just haven't gotten around to it just yet.

There have been a few threads on this topic already, some by year, some not quite "favorite" but "top 100" etc.

Might be worth checking out.

You've listed some of mine already, so let me see what I can add

As far as modern games go:

13 Sentinels has some amazing music. I never finished that game. I want to go back to it at some point and do so as I really like Vanillaware and think Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir and 13 Sentinels are probably their best games. The remake of Odin Sphere is far better than Dragon's Crown even though Dragon's Crown seem to be the more popular game, but I digress. Here's a few tracks from 13 Sentinels

As for Mega Man X games, man some of the fan made ones in progress already have some great tracks

Mega Man X Corrupted

Awesome cover version of the same song

More 32-bit and on...

Valkyrie Profile

Xenogears

Guilty Gear in general, but for example:

Pretty much anything from Supergiant, IE Bastion

Doom 2016

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Better in-game as it's very dynamic, with different elements of tracks coming in as you do better, where the soundtrack album is specific mixes.

Final Fantasy XIV
One of the channels with most/all tracks (I think?)
But since that's around 450, some selections...

Main themes at least
The Last of Us
Uncharted

Pokemon battle music are some of my favorite gaming music.

Specifically the battle music played during legendary encounters: https://youtu.be/92xRszGkyog

DS Era has great Pokémon music in general. Here’s another one from Black and White vs. the team from those games: https://youtu.be/pF1n0GflZMg
I own too many hoodies jackets hoodies and DS games and I’m not ashamed!

Here are some of the soundtracks I enjoy enough to listen to on the regular. They aren't necessarily the "best" soundtracks, but they're the ones I enjoy and want in my ears more often than not.

Shadow of the Ninja (NES)
McDonald's Treasure Land Adventures (Treasure, yo! Genesis)
Gunstar Heroes (for a little while; the soundtrack is super impressive but gets REAL grainy. Genesis)
Batman (NES)
Gimmick! (NES)
Lords of Thunder (TGCD)
Gate of Thunder (TGCD)
Shining Wisdom (Saturn)
Soukyugurentai (Saturn/Arcade)
Magical Chase (Sakimoto! TG16)
Gauntlet IV (Sakimoto! Genesis)
Verytex (Sakimoto! Genesis)
Midnight Resistance (Sakimoto! Genesis)
Dragon Saber (Arcade)
Actraiser (SNES)
Joe & Mac (SNES)
Super Castlevania IV (SNES)
Super EDF (SNES)
Legendary Axe (TG16)
Soldier Blade (TG16)
X-Men (Arcade)
Dairus II (Arcade)
Air Zonk (TG16)
Super C (NES)
