Yeah, I love it. Even more than my first time through it. It's like Tomino's Vifam, but I like ZZ even more. When you can get past the slightly jarring placement of ZZ and the events in the middle of some big UC stuff, I rather love how it's kind of isolated and more of a coming of age / shounen tale in ways. To my surprise I didn't even mind Beecha and Mondo this time, though seeing them become main pilots or ordering people around later on is still a bit cringey. Glemy is the only character that annoyed me this time really, though he's still not as bad as some other annoying Tomino characters. And I just love how he gets taken out...
I watched the EG encode but apparently the Daisuki streams had vastly superior subs. I found a patch out there that EG released so it updated all the episode files. Specifically, I saw a lot of people talking about how the conversation between Sayla and Bright in episode 46 is VERY different. I kept the old episodes around before finishing the resubs to make sure everything worked right, so I flipped on the old 46 I had to compare and yeah... the dialogue was insanely different and I assume the old subs were just flatout wrong. It also corrected some spellings, like Kamille again, but instead of Puru they used Ple, I don't really care though and either works for me. So I think a top notch translation enhanced the experience as well, alongside the BluRay beauty of this production.
The pacing is slower than Zeta but in a way, this makes it easier for me to break up ZZ into arcs in my mind. Judua's home colony arc, them lost in space a bit, the bad Moon Moon two parter, then the desert and Africa, then finally back to space for the finale. The final stretch is one of Tomino's tamer ones, for some of his other shows the last ~10 episodes worth get seriously crazy and addicting to blast through. ZZ's finale is still really epic, though a lighter intake if that makes sense. Still, expect Tomino to erase some characters in a big swoop.
Spoilers:
I've seen Char's Counterattack twice already and am feeling a little apathetic about rewatching that one, but it would feel weird to come this far again and not finish up with that. I like it, as in Amuro vs Char Final Round, but otherwise I think it could have been vastly superior if it worked more off of the Zeta/ZZ material. Both Kamille and Haman being in CCA would have shaken up things dramatically. Some people hate Char's resolve in CCA but I think he's honestly always been kind of batshit, even from the beginning like The Origin shows us. Who knows... I might watch it again. But I'm a bit more curious to see F91 again for a second watch. It sucks that one was supposed to be a TV series but got cut short, then we got the craptacular Victory Gundam instead. After those two movies, now I'm getting kind of excited to watch Unicorn again too.
In general, I think I'll be further annoyed from here on how a lot of UC Gundam or the fans ignore ZZ. I can see how the good ending of the Zeta movies from 2005 even kind of retcons it a bit too, so it's even like Tomino or Sunrise wants to ignore it at times. That's dumb. Anyways don't believe the lies... ZZ Gundam is GREAT! Give it a shot.
