Started rewatching ZZ on August 14th last Tuesday... a mere week later and 47 episodes gone, I'm already done binge-rewatching it.

Yeah, I love it. Even more than my first time through it. It's like Tomino's Vifam, but I like ZZ even more. When you can get past the slightly jarring placement of ZZ and the events in the middle of some big UC stuff, I rather love how it's kind of isolated and more of a coming of age / shounen tale in ways. To my surprise I didn't even mind Beecha and Mondo this time, though seeing them become main pilots or ordering people around later on is still a bit cringey. Glemy is the only character that annoyed me this time really, though he's still not as bad as some other annoying Tomino characters. And I just love how he gets taken out...

I watched the EG encode but apparently the Daisuki streams had vastly superior subs. I found a patch out there that EG released so it updated all the episode files. Specifically, I saw a lot of people talking about how the conversation between Sayla and Bright in episode 46 is VERY different. I kept the old episodes around before finishing the resubs to make sure everything worked right, so I flipped on the old 46 I had to compare and yeah... the dialogue was insanely different and I assume the old subs were just flatout wrong. It also corrected some spellings, like Kamille again, but instead of Puru they used Ple, I don't really care though and either works for me. So I think a top notch translation enhanced the experience as well, alongside the BluRay beauty of this production.

The pacing is slower than Zeta but in a way, this makes it easier for me to break up ZZ into arcs in my mind. Judua's home colony arc, them lost in space a bit, the bad Moon Moon two parter, then the desert and Africa, then finally back to space for the finale. The final stretch is one of Tomino's tamer ones, for some of his other shows the last ~10 episodes worth get seriously crazy and addicting to blast through. ZZ's finale is still really epic, though a lighter intake if that makes sense. Still, expect Tomino to erase some characters in a big swoop.

Spoilers:
If I could change something, I would have rather Puru lived instead of Leina. Or then I had the idea that maybe a Puru 3 could have somehow awakened and escaped Glemy's goons. Puru 3 would retain the memories of both Puru 1-2, so her and Judua could get together. Ah well. She's a lot of fun and I love her though, funny how a kid character is better than all the Zeta Cyber Newtype characters combined.

A lot of the deaths are humorously understated though, like Puru 2 just passing out after a swift camera cut... if you blink you miss it. Then that second Moon Moon girl who dies from invisible rocks. Some bizarre deaths for sure, not sure if it was laziness or what. Since otherwise... ZZ's budget is incredible, I took 213 screencaps.

Haman's suicide still weirds me out a bit, but I guess she wanted to hold her end of the bargain up for their honorable duel. I still think she had some good in her, even though she didn't care about the lives of Glemy, Cello, Chara, etc around her. I imagine she maybe assumed Axis was too weak to continue on after that final battle and was sick of war so she just let go.

I've seen Char's Counterattack twice already and am feeling a little apathetic about rewatching that one, but it would feel weird to come this far again and not finish up with that. I like it, as in Amuro vs Char Final Round, but otherwise I think it could have been vastly superior if it worked more off of the Zeta/ZZ material. Both Kamille and Haman being in CCA would have shaken up things dramatically. Some people hate Char's resolve in CCA but I think he's honestly always been kind of batshit, even from the beginning like The Origin shows us. Who knows... I might watch it again. But I'm a bit more curious to see F91 again for a second watch. It sucks that one was supposed to be a TV series but got cut short, then we got the craptacular Victory Gundam instead. After those two movies, now I'm getting kind of excited to watch Unicorn again too.

In general, I think I'll be further annoyed from here on how a lot of UC Gundam or the fans ignore ZZ. I can see how the good ending of the Zeta movies from 2005 even kind of retcons it a bit too, so it's even like Tomino or Sunrise wants to ignore it at times. That's dumb. Anyways don't believe the lies... ZZ Gundam is GREAT! Give it a shot.

I happened to come across a Gundam Wing DVD at a thrift store. It has the first five or so episodes on one disc. I hadn’t watched it since the toonami days, so I figured I would give it a retry to see if I still like it.

The 1990s anime style still holds up visually, but the characters and story don’t. Heero Yuy is a flipping jerk face. Relena is annoying. Every character has oblique motivations. I kept scratching my head wondering why these characters are acting this way.

I’m probably not going to seek out the rest of the series, but I gotta admit it’s good to look at.

Wing is one of the worst by several miles, hopefully that doesn't turn you off from the rest of the franchise hehe. Plenty of good Gundam's, but some stinkers too. Victory and Wing are the bottom of the barrel to me. I never watched Seed Destiny since it sounded pretty bad too.

I have recently found out about the Serial Experiment Lain. That was the last anime i watched, finished it yesterday.

It's not very new, released in 1998 or something, but when you think about it, all the ideas are very similar to what we are going with the VR technology XD
It's spiritual and weird and i loved it

Finally an unpopular opinion we can agree on. I know it can be hard to get through the slow, silly start but it only makes the maturation of the characters that much more meaningful when it happens. As I probably said before somewhere on this thread, I even don't mind the oft maligned Tigerbaum arc because the kids they encounter are a mirror of the main characters form the start of the show and along with the tone shift shows how much things have changed.

Tomino has said that the New Translation movies aren't intended to be canon or rewrite history, he just wanted the movie trilogy to stand on its own (which it really doesn't so kind of a fail there) and have a happy ending. It's a shame so many fans have taken it as a sign that ZZ is retconned which is clearly not the case given the fact that Unicorn follows up on it.

I never watched Seed Destiny since it sounded pretty bad too.

Save yourself the agony unless you want to witness some of the greatest acts of Marty Stu-ing in the history of fiction.

Lain is one of my all-time favorite shows, always cool to see others find and enjoy it.

Not entirely the same, but you may want to take a look at Dennō Coil, which is more AR than VR, but goes for some similar ground. Offhand, Real Drive skews a bit closer and may also be of interest.

Well I've fallen into the pokecraze now and I decided to watch the original pokemon series. I haven't seen any new anime that I want to watch quite yet.

I thought about rewatching it with clear eyes as i am not even sure i have seen all the seasons back in the day.
It keeps me wondering, if every episode has rocket team show up, and they end up flying to the sky....
How many episodes you need to binge watch for that event to become annoyed by their appearance

So I'm one of those crazy individuals who actually bought Sentai's super-expensive blu-ray set of The Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I don't think I even got halfway through when I first tried to watch the series, but I mostly attribute that to not liking to watch things on my PC; I was definitely a fan. But at the same time I remember during my original watch, I had trouble getting into the first couple episodes.

Anyway, I'm three episodes in to my rewatch and am COMPLETELY IN LOVE WITH THIS SERIES. It does space opera exactly how I like! I can't wait to get through the whole thing and then explore the spinoffs. I feel like I'd like to read the novels too, but that might be too much of a commitment.
