So is Suikoden 2 worth the price of entry?

it's hard to get into a game with 43523654235462457 playable characters....

I, on the other hand, am going to emphatically disagree with both of you. I'm not going to start a subject of morality here, but should he feel inclined to purchase the game then suggesting pirating is certainly not the answer, regardless of the price of entry. Clearly if he's considering the game, the game must take priority over the past gen console and collection of games he would otherwise consider. If not, he can always purchase the latter instead.glynnahab wrote:I'm with Moz on this one. Don't do it.
With the money you would spend on this one game, you could get a past gen console AND a good collection of games for it.
I'd suggest finding the ISO and emulating.

I'd say you'd be best served by picking up the ISO and trying it out a bit. See if you're enjoying the game or not. I'd hate to spend that much money on a game only to find out that some aspect of it made it unfun.

I was going to rebuy the first one till I learned it was on the PSN...I'd say the second one has a good chance of coming out the same way.Flak Beard wrote:So I'm listening to the latest Retronauts about the Suikoden series and they mention a lot of localization issues with Suikoden 2. Yeah, this is true. Though... they never localized the PSP ports for the first two outside of Japan, that sucked.Unleaded Logic wrote:I was going to rebuy the first one till I learned it was on the PSN...I'd say the second one has a good chance of coming out the same way.Flak Beard wrote:So I'm listening to the latest Retronauts about the Suikoden series and they mention a lot of localization issues with Suikoden 2. Anyways, I'm with others in that it's hard to justify a game being ~$100, but on the other hand I can also say it's easily one of the best JRPG's I've ever played and among the best on the PSX. It feels like a direct sequel to the first game, unlike the later sequels that all kind of did their own thing. The game is much more massive than the first though, probably over twice as long, etc. I'd also only recommend playing it if you've played the original, because they have a lot of direct connections with a handful of characters and stories, a lot more than the rest of the series, and it really makes the experience even better.
Luckily I had a friend who dished out the cash for it a few years ago (when it was STILL going for ~$100) and borrowed it from him. I got lucky and nabbed a copy of the first game for only like ~$20-30, but yeah, someday I'd love to own II, but who knows when that'll happen.
On a random and hilarious note, I'm all about being authentic with games and collecting ... but I actually put the original Suikoden in a single jewel case instead of the double one it comes with. Why? Well, I'm sure anyone who's seen that American cover can guess why. It looks much nicer going through my collection and seeing the booklet cover as the front of the case, lol...

Re: So is Suikoden 2 worth the price of entry?
I am really glad I beat the shit out of those games earlier in my childhood. I had two friends when I was growing up who would exclusively play RPGs and Goldeneye. One day I said let me give this a try, I ended up playing FF7 as my first rpg, then shortly thereafter I was on a quest to beat every single RPG I could find. I thought the first Suikoden was good, 2 is definitely the best one out of them all. My friend just picked it up 1 month ago, got it for 70 on ebay, not too bad, we both kid about how fucking dumb we are considering we all bought the same games that are now becoming harder and harder to come by. I can't even remember all the PSX rpgs I had. If it were me and I had the extra loot I would get it as soon as possible. Look at it this way, the price of that game is never going to come down, it's only going to go up.

I passed on the chance to get Suikoden 2 a few weeks ago. It was the first time I have ever seen it for sale. I could not bring myself to spend $130 on it. I guess one day I could get lucky find it at a more reasonable price.

This topic got not one, not two, but three bumps with over a month between posts.
