Evil within is amazing, I loved the first one and the sequel expands on it and does everything even better, I am on the tail end of it now and I am sad that it is almost over.

Goldeneye is horrific, I never played goldeneye in its prime and I acknowledge that the FPS genre has come so far that there is no going back, but man is this game boring. I am on the last mission and will probably finish it just to finish it, but I have not had a single second of fun with the game yet. It is so amazing how poorly n64 games age compared to the older gens with very few exceptions.

I will start bayonetta 2 when I beat evil within and will also probably start a few indie games that I bought during the last sale(not sure what yet)
Although I still feel goldeneye has aged well and is still amazing, I think that people's initial viscerally negative reaction to it is because they have grown accustomed to the current style of play by first person shooters.

WASD controls were not a thing even on pc at that time. The magic of goldeneye isn't really in the control scheme, even if pushing the z trigger is sooooo fulfilling. The magic is in the expanding goals based on difficulty and the overall feel of the weapons. There is an absolute sense of impact that is very fulfilling and addictive... a feeling that is very lacking compared to many fps games today.

The feeling of getting hit and the physical push your character receives feels so right... the silly animations the enemies undergo as they get hit are engrained in my brain.

Most of all, it is just about the level designs and expanding goals. Playing the game on agent versus secret agent and 00 agent are such a vastly different game experience.

I get it if the controls bother you, because they are archaic and a sign of a different era of video games. It rides that line of what fps games were and what they eventually became. There is no way to excuse that outside of just saying, "You have to get used to them." But we live in an era of games where we have so much choice that it begs to ask the question, "should I have to?" That all depends on the person.

I agree that Goldeneye aged poorly but I disagree that most N64 classics have. Mario 64, both Zelda games, most other Rare games on the system, Super Smash, Star Fox 64, Silicon Valley and Mario Kart 64 (which has aged poorly graphically but not in fun factor) are all timeless. I could list off plenty more that have held up quite well.

I tried playing it on original hardware and it was unplayable for me so I decided to emulate it and mess around with the controls to simulate modern day console fps gameplay and it works pretty well for the most part. I personally find the level design to be drab, the goals did not excite me, and the braindead AI just makes the whole thing a slog.

Having said all that I will not bash the game as a whole, I get its historical signifigance, and I have tons of friends who absolutely adore the game to this day, but for someone who played it for the first time after playing titles like doom 2016 it is a pretty hard sell.

Agree on Mario 64

During the n64 heyday I was a ps1 nut so my n64 experience for its time is extremely limited. I loved mario 64 and still do, played countless hours of wwf no mercy and wrestlemania 2000 with friends.

Other than that the rest of the n64 library I didn't play until much later and for the most part I find them all tough to get into.

I did like either zelda game, could never get into smash(I prefer more traditional fighting games like street fighter), and the other games I tried to play I just could not get into (donkey kong 64, jet force gemini and a few others)

I did love paper mario and enjoyed kirby, but the rest of the library is just a really hard sell for me.

Do you want competitive or co-op? If co-op FPS interests you at all, Payday 2 is still going strong (though it will stop receiving updates around November of this year), and Killing Floor 2 is still getting new levels and events. I've been playing both off and on for a couple of years and have had a lot of good times with them.

Front Mission Evolved. This is my first Front Mission game and before anyone freaks out. Yes, I know what the SNES games are and this is different. I know this was not looked at favorably by fans. I'm just looking for a fun TPS. I bought a few on PS3 I will post when they all arrive. Only a few missions in and it's just alright so far. Kinda fun and I'm not upset for $6 playing it.

I have heard that the fourth Gundam Musou game is very different from the other three. I've only played the first one though Xp . I REALLY liked that one, so I have the 3rd and 4th in my sights (already own the 2nd one).

Wait, what are you playing the other games for if not to unwind?
