Help: Biverted Gameboy displaying inverted image.

Post by Betagam7 »

Hi all,

So about a month back I got a biverted DMG for cheap on Ebay. As suspected for the price not everything was perfect. While it was functional and the backlight worked the biversion was displaying an inverted image (dark where light shades should be and vice versa). I read up on this and it seemed like it might just be a case of rotating the polarising sheet 90 degrees. I sent off for a special tri wing screwdriver and today took it apart and tried this. While the polarising film changed colour from dark to transparent when rotated in front of the screen as shown in multiple videos this didn't change the inversion. All that happened was that the image got slightly darker.

I'm attaching some photos of everything to see if anyone can figure out the issue here. As far as I can see the silver layer has been removed from behind the screen and while there is something still there I'm presuming that is the LCD itself (sorry, I'm far from an expert at this and wouldn't have had a clue about how to bivert it myself). There is a bivert chip installed as pictured.

I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions as to what the problem might be and how I can correct it to display the image correctly.

Another thing to note. The screen is visible (exactly the same in fact) without the polarising sheet placed behind it. All the videos I watch say it should be black until the polarising sheet is placed there....

I wonder if someone tried to mod the unit previously in some fashion.

You mean before the biversion mod?

Fixed it!

Bizarrely, despite doing all the complicated stuff like soldering on the bivert chip, installing the backlight and even fitting an buzz reduction capacitor thing-a-me-bob (technical term may vary), they had neglected to peel away the final layer of polarizer from the back of the screen which was countering the bivert chip and inverting the colours.

I did this myself using a stanley knife and some very careful peeling and huzzah! I now have a beautifully biverted Gameboy. An absolute bargain too as I bought it for £35 including 3 games and an official carry bag from an Ebayer who apparently couldn't figure out the problem either! Also I get the pleasure of saying I did a bit of the mod myself even though my only previous experience of modding is something as technical as pulling the fake screen insert out of a Gameking II. :)

Nice fix, that screen so much better then the original dim lime screen. Good info for anyone upgrading their Gameboy which has the better button spread placement over the GBA. That screen is bright, I'm tempted to dust off my neglected Gameboy for this mod.

Thanks. Bizarrely, this is actually the first time in my life that I've owned a DMG (despite the vast quantities of other handhelds I own) so I'm now going to have to start picking up more original grey carts.
