What Metal Gear Solid Release to Get?

Post by racketboy »

So even though I own the original Metal Gear Solid on PS1 and MGS2 on PS2, I have yet to actually play them. :o
I've been meaning to -- I just haven't.

I will probably play a bit of the original PS1 disc on the PS3, but I'm wondering about enhanced ports.
It looks like theirs a PS3 collection, but what's the difference between "Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection" and "Metal Gear Solid HD Collection"?

Where does this leave things like the Gamecube Twin Snakes release? Is it worthwhile with these newer ports if you have a PS3?

Legacy Collection is just the HD Collection + 4 + a download code for MGS1 I believe.

Twin Snakes can be missed, but I personally really enjoy it. Some fans hate it because reasons, but I liked it just fine. It plays the same as the original, but has the enhancements MGS2 had and looks prettier; What's to hate? I find the new voice tracks fine and the OTT Matrix esque cutscenes don't really bother me either. And some claim the first person button makes boss fights too easy, but no one forces you to use it... That said, the original is a perfect game, so I can understand people passing on Twin Snakes.

The HD Collection release includes HD ports of MGS2, 3, and Peace Walker, with the versions of 2 and 3 including most of what the Substance and Subsistence releases included for their respective releases. In turn, MGS3 includes ports of the original MSX Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, carrying over the updated aspects from the PS2/Xbox release (portraits that aren't just Hollywood actors for instance).

As mentioned, the Legacy Collection is mostly just a bundle of that with codes for MGS/VR Missions and a patched-up copy of MGS4 (only way to get it retail in the US AFAIK). It does also include some motion comics as well that had not been available stateside before. It's also only on PS3, where the HD Collection was also on 360 (and Vita, though it didn't include Peace Walker on that).
So there are those slight reasons to prefer that over the HD Collection - nothing massive, but it's the clear version to buy if there's a choice.

Personally, I opted for Twin Snakes when I played through the series - first person aiming does make the game easier, but it also basically makes it play like all of the rest of the 3D entries. Technically, the Windows release also had first person aiming too. The over-the-top cutscenes are kind of laughable, but I think it's a fine way to play MGS. It's the most readily playable "HD port" of MGS - the PC version splits the difference, but it's a little rare, and a bit difficult to get working these days (despite being published by Microsoft - go figure).

Ok so I guess I was kinda thrown off -- I was thinking their were physical copies of the original Metal Gear Solid here...
So for MGS on a console in physical form, is there only the PS1 original and then Twin Snakes if you want to go that route?

Pretty much, yeah. Technically, there's a second edition of the game in Japan (Integral), some of which we got via VR Missions and/or additions to the PC version, but there are (as of yet) no "new" versions other than Twin Snakes.

Might end up changing if they elect to do a new set of ports, since the PS4 doesn't just play PS1 games.

Count me in for a strong no against Twin Snakes. The first game has aged gracefully and still holds up to this day, even the voice acting. I replay it frequently. MGS2 has arguably the best gameplay mechanics next to Phantom Pain, so those added elements in Twin Snakes are nice... but not needed. The original wasn't designed for first person parts or lockers. The auto-aim in the original is very lenient and easy. Ultimately, they completely redid the OST and being one of the best OST's on the entire PSX platform and best in the franchise, that's the ultimate NOPE for me.

You messed with perfection... you messed up. You don't see Twin Snakes getting visually referenced in MGS4.

The HD collection on the PS3 is excellent. I noticed a few glitches in MGS3, but just visual weirdness in a shot or two. Definitely great versions of MGS2-MGS3 to play, with the VR missions of MGS2, and the MSX MG games through MGS3.

The Legacy Collection does interest me a bit for a patched disc of MGS4? Otherwise the update is like ~9GB at least or something last I remember.

I hope you're ready for the magic that is MGS.

I'm a big yes for the GC version of MGS. The reasons were already stated, but keep in mind my play with it was right along about the same time with Metal Gear Solid Integral for Windows 9X which is where Twin Snakes got its changes from in respect to the first person mode, and then the rest taking queues from MGS2 which have stuck around pretty much since. It's a fantastic game and looks excellent, hell using the GC HDMI device it really pops as I have that external mod device.

MGS Integral was a late 99, 2000 title first in Japan on PS1 and then went to the PC shortly after and tweaked a bit more with some MGS2 aspects for the Gamecube. It later did pop up on PS3 though as a PS1 classics download only. Best to just read this for the changes. http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/Metal_G ... :_Integral

And this for the MGS vs Twin Snakes changes: http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/Differe ... win_Snakes

See if that bugs you or not. Since I never experienced MGS (PS1) and bypassed it for the PC release I bought back in 2000/2001 I don't have any negative feelings against Twin Snakes.

If you want to experience the series authentically, go for the PS1 version for sure. It feels more like the MSX originals and allows you to see the transition between the 2d gameplay of the classic games and the fully 3D gameplay of the later ones.

If you just want to play them to see how the story plays and for funsies, I'd go Gamecube. You'd probably skip the MSX games in that case too, and starting with Twin Snakes would make the transition to MGS 2 a lot easier as they play more similarly.

Either version is great. I prefer the PS1 version but I enjoyed the Cube title a whole bunch when I played it in the summer too.

For the game console, the Dreamcast Bleemcast version.

Metal Gear Solid remake on the Gamecube removed the voice accents losing something in the game. Look for the obscure PC disc version. A forgotten Microsoft title and very well done! Upped graphics, first person view while moving everywhere, keeping the original language voiced accents and includes the VR Missions. There are updated unofficial drivers for newer PCs.

That's the game I said. Metal Gear Solid Integral. I had the big box release of it which MS put out for Konami in the US. That's where I got my original MGS experience start to end, also the only time I ever totally finished it. I never much cared for it on PSX as it felt lacking. I think Konami then probably would have agreed since they went back to update the game to the Integral (Definitive) version I guess until that Twin Snakes release dropped from Silicon Knights. All this back and forward in the end is about taste, but the integral/twin snakes releases were the final cuts Konami was on board with.
