Did you just describe Quest for Glory?

This is Gold.

I've always been surprised by the RE2>RE1 opinions I've seen. I think RE1 Director's Cut (the only version I have played on PS1) is the best classic RE game. Of course, I also put Code Veronica as a close second, so I may not be the best person to ask. The setting, the cheese, and the puzzles are just gold in my nostalgia-tinted eyes.

My personal ranking for the pre-RE4 games I've played is: RE1 DC > RE:CV > RE2 > Remake (not played the HD version) > RE3 > RE0

RE0 is the only one I haven't finished. It was all right and I actually liked the two-character shtick, but it's possible I was burnt out but then because I had just finished RE3 and Code Veronica.

Also, aside from characters I like RE:Revalations more than RE2.

We have some divisive RE thoughts here. It's one of my top favorite franchises.

Here's my favorites though: REmake (probably #1), RE2, RE4, and RE5. I'm not kidding on RE5... especially after another marathon with these games last year with the PS4 releases, even back to back with RE4, the combat is even better in RE5 and it's just incredibly fun. I loved it via co-op with a friend when it was new and then solo, just give Sheva a sniper and you're done. I got the platinum on the PS4 version solo, it's entirely doable and fine. Tons of replayability in a classic PS2-era Capcom fashion with NG+ elements essentially, upgrades and items carry over between missions. The plot is ridiculous and Wesker is front and center. Amazing stuff. Just rambling on this one since it's the main one I have to defend.

Not a fan of CV much though, easy to see it as the true RE3 though. RE3 is okay. RE0 is flawed because of the lack of item boxes, instead you can put down items in any room but only a set amount, which leads to tons of annoying backtracking. I hated Revelations. But I enjoyed Revelations 2, though it's very Westernized and different. I don't hate RE6, it's okay. These are all mid tier.

I'm cool with the original RE1.

... oh yeah RE7! Well I really dug it, but it lacks a lot of connections to the others that I miss.

I've played through some of the original RE on PS1, didn't love it.
I've beaten REmake on GameCube, loved it.
I've beaten RE2 on PS1, I enjoyed it.
I played through half of RE3 on PS1, I was kinda meh.
I beat RE4 on PS2, loved it.
I beat RE5 on 360, it was OK.
I beat half of RE6 on 360, it was OK.
I beat Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS, I enjoyed it.
I beat Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles on Wii, I enjoyed it.
I beat Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles on Wii, I enjoyed it.

Out of all that, REmake was the best for classic RE gameplay.
RE4 was best for modern era RE.

RE7 looks pretty cool, I'd play it in VR if I had the setup.

I played a little of the two Chronicles games, they were pretty boring (and hard) solo. Definitely something that must be played with a partner I think.

Dead Aim on the PS2 is one of the weirder side ones I beat. It's okay, very short and also probably better with a gun controller. In this one you walk around in third person, but then aiming goes into first person. Still had a cool save theme.

I did beat both games co-op with other people. I can see how it wouldn't be as fun solo.

I agree on 0. It's a serviceable game, but the item-dropping can get you if you aren't familiar with the layout (and sometimes you really can't be familiar with it when you have to make drops).

I've only played a bit of both Chronicles games, but they seemed really fun and had all the camp I want in my RE.

As for modern (RE4 and after) Resident Evil games, I'm with you on RE5, but I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite. Solo it can be a little frustrating, but with a good partner it's really the best co-op game of that generation and maybe longer. My wife and I both love it and between campaign replays and Mercs, I'd say we have 300 hours in the three versions we own (360, PS3 Gold, PS4). I'm glad you mention Wesker because he's the best villain of the franchise in my book, and in 5 he's got that perfect 80s-action-movie diabolical-ness!

RE4 I didn't play until the Wii release. I liked the new direction a lot and it felt like a good blend of RE and thriller action movies at the time. It was Capcom's best franchise retool since Mega Man X.

RE7 was a solid game, but I didn't like it as much as either classic RE (RE1, CV) or the best of Action-RE (RE5, RE4). Some might say the franchise needed to be shaken up some, and RE7 did that pretty well, taking on different influences like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw and blending some good RE elements into the mix. I just felt that it changed so much it was like a love-letter more than a sequel. Hopefully we will see more of the lore opened up and other characters and locations featured in RE8.

RE6 was trash. They went for full spectacle and didn't have the gameplay to back it up. The level design was nowhere near as fun, the split campaign didn't give any one set of characters enough room to really shine, and the smartphone menu system just felt like pandering after the other great inventory systems they'd had in the past.

The others would go like this: RE5 > RE4 > RE7> Revelations > (Chronicles would go here probably) > Operation Raccoon City > Revelations 2 > RE6

I may be missing some there, but those are the ones I remember.

Yeah, RE7 really does feel too much like TCM in a weird way. I wonder how the Chris DLC is. I'm still irked that Chris isn't really Chris anymore though, if you've seen his new design and heard the new voice. I have no idea why he's so radically different, then we have the RE2 remake coming... are Leon and Ada going to get redesigned and recasted for some reason too? They even based off the RE4/RE5 characters for the CGI movies so the continuity has always been there. Just makes me further believe RE7 is an attempt to reboot everything, which doesn't really make me happy.

Ultimately I still wish RE7 wasn't part of the main line because of the perspective change. They have said they're still doing third person for the RE2 remake. But then they've made it sound like it will be a complete overhaul with free moving camera control and won't be just a face lift. Which to me personally is pretty disappointing, because of how amazing REmake turned out when it still plays exactly how the original played. And I think REmake is still pretty popular, it's not like I think modern or new gamers would have issues with the classic style of RE2... I was thinking if they could somehow do fixed camera angles and let you switch to the RE4 over the shoulder look that would be neat, but who knows. I'm excited but RE just feels different and keeps losing a little something with the new releases to me nowadays.

Like I said I don't hate RE6, but I totally agree the gameplay is a massive downgrade coming out of RE4 and RE5. They stripped out all the upgrade and customization mechanics for weapons and things in general. The medal system was weird. It was way too simplified... like a Naughty Dog shooter.

Anyways, did you play The Evil Within by chance? I love the first game, but it was flawed. However 2 was probably one of the biggest surprises to me this year and I definitely think it's better than RE7 in my book. I would put both TEW games above post-RE5 releases. It really is what I wish RE was thesedays, naturally. It will be cool if Bethesda lets Tango keep making more.

I can kinda agree with this, I wouldn't call it trash though. But I would say it's a case of quantity over quality for sure. IIRC there's four campaigns in the game, each campaign long enough to be its own game. My wife and I got burnt out after finishing two campaigns, and decided we'd come back later to finish the other two. That was about three years ago now. :|

RE6 is the Resident Evil films as a game. It's total shit.

Oh, we're comparing favorites!

Resident Evil 2 was my entry point to the series, and as such it remains my favorite. It was also the only one of the original series where I felt like I wasn't playing some superhuman elite cop.

After that come Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil REmake for me. Yes, I like both enough to keep them at the same point. Both have pros and cons I like, such as the camp of the original or the updated Crimsonheads of the REmake.

RE4 comes after this. It didn't feel like a Resident Evil to me, but by that point I had been playing tank control-survival horror for so long that a lot of the punch was lost. I think RE4 is an incredibly well put together game, but the additions which made it more user friendly also unfortunately divided it for me.

RE3...and this is where things start going downhill for me. Nemesis just felt too ridiculous at times with its mercenaries and supercops. Even in a tube top and miniskirt, Jill Valentine is so well trained, she can drop a genetically engineered super soldier without issue.

RE5 was where I stopped playing the series. You know that super cop thing I keep mentioning? That was Chris Redfield in this one, to a T. I never felt a horror vibe, I just felt...well, sort of meh. This was it for me.

RE:CV is laughably awful in my opinion; the plot goes off the rails fast and stays off, never to return. Instead its now floating somewhere in space, a ghost train shooting for the moon that I don't want to ride. Which is a shame, because I liked Jill Valentine.

So yeah, there goes my list of titles. I never did get around to RE0 either, which is a shame.

1. Seen this classic argument against Buff Chris a lot. Realistically though, do you blame him? He is the leader of a mercenary military faction that's job is to take out biomutants and monsters that tear people into pieces. Chris maybe popping a few pills and doing some weight lifting doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

2. Think you might mean Claire for CV? Jill isn't anywhere in that one.

Wesker goes full Matrix in CV and it definitely is hilarious. The villain and STEVE were horrendous too... phew.
