Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces
Re: Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces
To be fair, a lot of times your shortcomings do involve gitting gud, like not setting off patrolling guards and not being hit by trains.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in days

There's an area in Borderlands 2 I need to play with you, my friend. It has a train. You would like it.noiseredux wrote:fuck that. I'm super good at getting hit by trains.

Beat it!
- So how do you even access the debug menu?
- How do you turn on Knuckles and Knuckles?
- I noticed Sonic has a move to go into a spin while landing, but what about Sonic CD's peel out? How do you turn that on or something?
- Looks like the Blue Sphere progress crosses over into other profiles, I started up a game with Knuckles and only have 6 more silver medals to get. How do you even get gold? All the rings? Or do harder Blue Sphere stages unlock after this? They've already been insane. It'll be a joke going back to vanilla Sonic 3 & Knuckles again after this haha.
- Looks like after beating it, you can level select. Is this kind of like NG+ and now you can basically farm levels to get the emeralds? I still have 3 left. Any general tips on these special stages? What's your strategy? Stock up on rings one lap, or blue spheres, etc... they were pretty damn tough haha. But on my new Knuckles run I already got 3 emeralds in Green Hill Zone.
Knuckles still has that wimpy shorter jump and it's been awhile since I ran him in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but his recovery animation from glide landing in this seems even slower? It's pretty noticeable to me. Never liked playing as him too much, but it's a fun little extra and I'll probably do a run with him in full eventually. I ran Sonic & Tails, even though I vastly prefer solo Sonic, but it was just too cool to go through with Tails again in a bunch of new levels. He saved my ass a few times too getting some boss hits in and using him to hover up to higher ledges was cool.
Phew man, what a freaking blast though. Pure bliss... clocked in about 5 hours which is huge for Sonic, but for the 20 some year wait I'm not complaining. Where does it stack up? Well I know a lot of people think Mega Man 9 outdoes some of the NES originals, but I have a hard time saying that. Same with Sonic here. Even though deep down... I probably do like this more than Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, it's just hard and a little weird to put it over the originals and where it gets its blueprints. Maybe I'll rank it eventually given time. But overall this might be top 5 material for me this year. I almost still can't believe this exists.
Give me some more time to think about that Sonic Mania 2 Zone wishlist.
I think the kids at Steam are neg repping positive reviews too.

Re: Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces
To access all the special features like debug mode and & Knuckles mode, it has to be done from a No Save slot sadly. I am glad you enjoyed the game! It was an absolute blast!

Ah dang, that's weird. It would have been cool if the Sonic CD Peel Out and Sonic 3&K Insta Shield Jump were permanent upgrades that you get to use in your main save.
Re: Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces
Yeah, and to get the gold medals you have to get all the coins in the blue sphere stages. I hear you don't actually have to get gold medals to unlock anything though, you just need to get silver medals.

I can't think of any nitpicks beyond the Oil Ocean boss. That's all I've got.
I guess anyone reading this thread that still hasn't played should avoid this thread until further notice. I'm glad I went in blind and the zones were a surprise. It was a thrill. Just want to emphasis this warning I guess.
We should talk music, while the remixes were amazing, I think some of the new tunes stood out the most. I love how the music seemed deliberately very 90'ish but also contemporary. I think it's just easy to say 2017 was the perfect time for Sonic Mania to come into existence. We probably could have gotten something like this over the last two decades, but the scope and quality wouldn't have been this. And there's a bit of a reinsurance on some retro movements lately. It feels like it was a perfect storm.
From the new zones, my favorite tracks:
Titanic Monarch Zone Act 1 - Really echoes Scrap Brain to me. While not as intense or evil as Death Egg, or robotic (in a cool way) as Metallic Madness or Metropolis, I love how Monarch feels both daunting and triumphant. It feels like you're in an endlessly massive Robotnick base and are finally almost there. Really epic stuff and I personally like Act 1's theme more than 2.
Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1 - Coming in a little beyond the midpoint, this feels like that perfect "uphill" battle kind of theme where you've made a lot of progress but there's still more go to. To me this sounds a lot like something straight out of the PSX/Saturn era, compared to the Mega Man X4-X6 styled tunes. Very catchy and driving.
Press Garden Zone Act 1 - A similar sounding track, but this one really invokes Sonic CD for me in a glorious way. Same with Act 2. Pretty hard to pick a favorite between these.
Studiopolis Act 2 - In your face and bumpin'. Loved this one, more glorious 90's vibes. Going through the game I thought it was weird there wasn't like a true carnival/pinball zone, but I guess Studiopolis was kind of it.
