Hiya! I know I gotta stop disappearing. Life is dumb.
I'm gonna go poke about and catch up a bit, maybe post in some random threads, then close this tab and forget to check back for another year or so.

Quick question, how many of you use that new spin dash in the game? I always forget it is there, but it is really easy to pull off and actually makes things move very smoothly!

I use the drop dash every once and a while. Other than that, just the spin dash from Sonic 2.

My body is ready for the Steam version to finally freaking drop tonight.

Pretty confident it'll be top 5 material for me this year. I'm like Zelda level hyped for this. I've avoided looking too into it and this thread too, but it sounds like it looks like Sonic 1/CD the most (best choice!) and kind of plays like 3/S&K. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made it through with all emeralds and got the real ending as Sonic and Tails. Looking forward to going through as Knuckles later.

It doesn't replace Sonic 3 & Knuckles for me like I thought it might but it felt good to play an official old-school Sonic game again. There are a lot of clever gimmicks in both the new and old levels. The bosses are a mixed bag, some of them are really really neat and some of them are kind of bland but that's nothing new for the franchise. The only nitpicks I have are fairly minor. (Not all of the zones have transition sequences for example. If you're going to do a few then do all of them!)

Also while I thought the special stages were cool from a design standpoint some of them are really brutal (the 7th emerald was surprisingly one of the easiest, I guess they wanted to give us a break because 5 and 6 are nuts). That might be just me though, I really just could not get a handle on these things. It took me longer to get the emeralds than to play the entire rest of the game and the payoff was... really not that worth it honestly.

The old zones are fine but the new zones are fantastic. It just makes me wish the whole game were new. The music, both remixed returning tracks and new tracks, are stellar as well.

This game is a true labor of love and a big step above the average fan game. It looks great, plays perfectly and is everything we loved about classic Sonic with some improvements here or there, despite the developers resisting the temptation to change or improve too much. It's so faithful however that if you weren't a fan of classic Sonic to begin with, the game probably won't change your mind.

I stopped after Studiopolis, which is incredible. It's an interesting mesh of all the games for sure. To me it has the aesthetics of Sonic 1, 2, and CD, along with the cooler wider power up/ring boxes, mixed in with the crazier complicated level designs from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I'm glad they went with the hidden rings for the special stages too, makes it a little more rewarding to explore more and easier to get all the emeralds. But I too am having some trouble on these, I have 3 emeralds so far I think. It's pretty cool though. Is there any point to collecting rings in the Sonic 3 & Knuckles checkpoint special stages though? Looks like the silver coins are used for unlockables in the extras I'm assuming.

Visually it's mindblowing. Love how good Sonic and Tails look, the backgrounds with tons of verticality and detailing just like Sonic CD, and there's so many neat little things everywhere. EggTV! Except... he will always be Dr Robotnick to me!

Music is amazing. Not as awesome as CD, but still really cool.

All in all, as I expected it's pure bliss... and I had the dumbest happy grin on my face while I played some tonight. I can finally add a new Sonic game to my annual replay of the classics. It might surpass Sonic 3 for me which is my least favorite of the classics, and maybe Sonic 2. This ultimately feels like what a 2D Sonic game on the Saturn could have been like.

For some reason I was under the impression each zone had 3 acts though, like Sonic 1 and CD. I kind of wish it was like that, but it's cool they went the Sonic 3 & Knuckles route with bosses every stage.

I do want to be greedy and hope this does really well and the same team gets to make a Sonic Mania 2. I guess they could remix some more stages from the classics... but something entirely new from start to finish would be amazing and more ideal. Seems like there's a big DRM fuss over the Steam version right now, but I'm assuming the reception and sales hopefully exceed Sega's expectations. If we can get two episodes of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and all these nasty new 3D games, surely we can get more Mania!

I want Sonic Mania 2 to feature all new stages and bring in shadow the hedgehog and make him good. If they do this... they are gods amongst men, because seriously.... shadow sucks worse then big the cat (LOVE YA BIG BOO!)

Yeah, you only need the silvers to unlock everything. The only thing getting all the golds will give you is an achievement.

It's a bunch of silly whining, mostly centered around it being always online which is a fair complaint but people are acting like Sega broke into their house and killed their dog. The devs have already said this wasn't their intention and are looking into it.

It's a win-win for Sega really. The game itself is well received and probably didn't cost them much. There's no reason they shouldn't push ahead with a sequel but they've made poor decisions before. They really can have their cake and eat it by handing the classic Sonic franchise over to the Mania team while they continue to make whatever modern Sonic games they feel like.

I finally found time to play Mania more and ended up beating it Monday night. Now I'm farming Chaos emeralds to later get the other ending. Some of these are tough but overall fun to get.

Once I do that, I probably won't play SM again until after I've played the crap out of Cuphead next month.

Some virus scans have a false positive for DRM like Denuvo. You'll have to add it to your exceptions.

Yes it's fine, a "heuristic virus" means it detected something that isn't a known virus but acts in a way similar enough to a virus for scans to suspect it. It's a known issue with Denuvo. It sounds like Sega might be removing this particular DRM at some point given the backlash they've been getting.
