As much as I love Nier (and believe me, I like it a LOT), I'm not sure I'd call it an RPG. I'd call it an action-adventure game, sure, but I'd say it's far more in the line of your Zelda's in terms of genre than an actual 3D action-RPG like (uhhhhhhhhhh) Shining Force EXA. It's AWFULLY light on the actual RPG elements to be on a best-RPG's list. Do you even level-up in Nier? I genuinely cannot remember Xp

I'm actually kinda surprised NieR is that popular, period. I thought the first game was mechanically pretty "meh".

Lufia II absolutely destroys the first game, though. Phantasy Star IV is legit amazing.
Defenders of Oasis, name doesn't ring a bell; but I don't remember the name at all well enough to know if that is correct. The pictures I looked up look like the right game. I have the remake of Lufia II on DS and they changed it to an action RPG style. Ill have to sit down and play through the game.

I can't fathom why FF15 was so well recieved. I think's it was awful and i think i went as far saying it's the most awful FF game i have played (on it's thread)

Anyways. Still not by far the most awful list i have seen. Only couple of the games on the list are what would appear on my personal list but at least there's not Oblivion or Skyrim there.

It definitely could use games like BG2 and Arcanum but those games probably aren't very popular in Japan.

I wonder whether Persona 4 VS Golden divided votes because i would have imagined it being higher than 3rd.

FFXV is good but not the best anything at all and Chapter 13 sucks so hard. I enjoyed it more in post game chapter. I liked it playing story chapters but liked it more post game to go around the world and do whatever.

Anyway favorite RPG personally. Ys Books I & II. Any version nearly (just not that wierd version with the digitized actors..creepy) but TG16 takes the cake.

I love Nier and I think why it's loved is not for the gameplay but the concept behind it. It has a great concept a great story. A bit off the wall but it works. Mechanically the game is worse than meh. It's more broken than the worlds faith in the US President's sound judgement. I think like TLOU. They are technically not good games at all. Just it's story, characters, music and presentation let people see what it could be. Nier Automata fixed the mechanics and still delivered everything else Nier was in DNA. NA is a fantastic game that plays very well. Easily gives Persona 5 a run for best RPG this year but I wouldn't put either in best of all time list.

Yeah. Mechanically Nier isn't great but i still liked the no brainer combat. Like Segata said the story, music and characters are what really make that game. Nier is really high on my favorite games of all time list (at times i might even say that it's number 1)

Sounds like NieR is one of those games that is a perfect candidate for someone's "favorite" game without being the "best". ;)
