Crossed out the ones I've played. I am a bit surprised as the article suggests, to see more FF on this last rather than DQ, despite it always feeling like FF found more success in the West while DQ had national holidays for release dates or something crazy with their obsession for it over there.

Love the Nier love. I am sure some people are high in the moment on some of these new releases, but still, that is very impressive for both Automata and Nier to be so high. I'm assuming Automata's success boosted the original games attention as well, I think it even got a reprint in Japan but maybe I'm making that up. It's great to see Automata was a success in Japan too. I hope Square takes Yoko Taro more seriously from here on. In a world where the Souls series accidentally became a monster franchise, maybe he's finally going to get the spotlight soon.

Xenoblade above Xenogears is everything wrong with the world...

Also a bit shocked to see Persona 5 up there, because from what I've gathered around here and the net, friends, etc, nobody seems to like it nearly as much as 4.

(And no, I've not played it, but I suspect it's not that different from Persona 4.)

I approve of Dragon Quest III and Chrono Trigger, though.

Polls like this tend to be heavily biased towards games that just came out. A 2018 list would look entirely different. Pretty silly, really.

Persona 5 is great and the best persona game when it comes to mechanics. They vastly changed the dungeons. The side dungeons called mementos work like old persona games tho.Tey re worked the battle system somehwat. Has an amazing OST. Thing is story and characters...Persona 4 tops it there.
Automata is great and even has one of the best stories in any game I ever played. Maybe the best OST this year so far. Plays great. Just not best all time. Easily the top 2 best this year.


Neither are games I would put all time AT ALL. Most of the best of all time came out int he 90s like FFVI,Earthbound,Chrono Trigger. I would put Xenoblade in the top 10. FFXV I just platinumed it. It's a game I shit on constantly even tho I really like it. It is in no way in hell a top RPG. Maybe 10th all time FF game mainline? Just by process of elimination. I always hate internet lists of best all time. XCX is a much better game than FFXV and XCX is a much weaker game than XC when it comes to story and characters but is more fun to explore and a improved battle system.

Automata feels like the best thing I've played since Demon's / Dark Souls, so I would say it's a top favorite for me. It's been like 4 weeks since I beat it and I can't stop thinking about it still. It's definitely not a current high, it blew me away and might even beat Breath of the Wild for me this year... when Zelda is my #1 series so that says something. Crazy!

Aw, jeez, it really just registered they put FFXV on there. I mean, I enjoyed my time with it, but making my top 20? Not a chance.
