Re: Games NOT Beaten 2017
Those games are pretty weak compared to classic 2D SRPGs.

Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed (Wii U)
I was actually pretty excited for this one. I'm usually a big fan of kart racers, but this one just turned me away so hard. I've never been a fan of Diddy Kong Racing, and the flying and water bits were not fun to play to me. The whole time I played it, I was just angry that it wasn't as good as Blur. Perhaps not angry, but it gave me an INTENSE urge to play Blur just because of how much better it is. The fact that it crashed on me while I was like 20 minutes in really sealed this one's fate. I don't play console games to play games that crash. Maybe I'll pick this up on PC sometime in the future to force it to try and run a bit more stable, but this has really soured my opinion of the Sega racers

Sly 3 HD.
You know what? I don't think I have time for this shit. I'm recovering from a surgery and this is making me anything but relaxed. Some of the most frustrating garbage I've played in a long time. The boss battles in China had me fuming. Now I'm probably rage quitting at this pirate insult memorization mini game that is complete trash. I don't even care that I have two worlds left. This is getting flushed.
Sly 3 did everything wrong. Navigating the levels is actually annoying and cumbersome. Sly seems weaker than ever before. Playing as both Bentley and Murray to navigate to the mission points is generally a pain. Ran into several glitches with Sly 3 whereas the first two were fine. The boss battles have to be done pixel perfect, when this is no Devil May Cry or whatever and has good intricate combat. So much trial and error bullshit everywhere. Platforming seems worse and more finnicky than before, Sly's circle button cane grab just flat out doesn't work half the time. What's worse? Let's top it all off with even more playable characters that suck. The panda guy with the rockets... how is this fun? Typical of a lot of bad platformer sequels, they decided that simplicity was boring and made basically every single mission some new lame ass minigame. Added to the annoyance is I kid you not, if you play inverted get ready to have to configure that for half the missions. For whatever reason setting the camera controls isn't a global thing, so any time you get a new minigame controlling a weird new gimmick, you have to manually change the controls for it. Every single thing.
Sly 1-2 were top notch but this just freaking sucks gameplay wise and mechanically. A shame because I still like the characters, writing, and story. But it's not worth the hassle.
I'll checkout 4 sometime. I don't care about skipping this.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS3)
A friend of mine, who is a Star Wars super fan, has had me listening to a lot of Star Wars audio books lately, and I've really enjoyed them. They've made for great listening while I play Binding of Isaac ;p . We were talking the other day and she was absolutely aghast that I'd owned TFU for so long but not played it, so today I set to rectify that. I kinda wish I hadn't played it, to be perfectly frank.
It's a character action game, very much in the vein of God of War. You have button combos you can perform and more to unlock, you have a health gauge and a special gauge. Most of your special gauge attacks revolve around using force grab and force lightning, both of which can manipulate the environment around you to break and throw certain objects. You can not only beat up bad guys but also platform around the levels, and several areas have a level of verticality, and that is I think where this game starts to go downhill.
The vertical element to the levels is a serious play hazard to both the player and the camera, as there were many times I'd get stuck tumbling or ragdoll-ing down a slope because an enemy hit me the right way. And if that isn't bad enough, you routinely get caught on and under the chunks of explodable debris, not only because the enemies can inadvertently set them off, but you can also set them off yourself by accident constantly because targeting with the force is so imprecise and fiddly. The enemies that ragdoll you absolutely kill this game. They turn it from an otherwise mediocre character action game with an okay theme into a downright trudge to play through.
It also really hasn't aged well in several respects. Lots of God of War-style QTE's which annoy the crap out of me. It's also a 2008 PS3 game, and holy shit does it look like it. Tons of grey and brown masses of metal and trash, really obvious skyboxes, ugly textures. The character models look alright, but they're just about the only thing that does. The story is also veeeery light, boring, and even annoying at how tropey and predictable it can be. Perhaps it gets better later, but I'm certainly not sticking around to find out.
Absolutely nothing this game did compelled me to play more of it. If I wanna play a fun beating-up-mans game, I'll go do some Yakuza. If I want a fun Star Wars game, I'll go play some of the Lego ones. If I want a GREAT 3D-action platformer, I'll go play Enslaved: Odyssey to the West again. Enslaved frequently came to mind during play as something that does everything this game wants to do but better in every way.

It's a fantastic game but the Wii U and Vita versions are awful. Think of it liek Bayonetta on PS3. Many people ended up hating it because they were unaware of the problems. Same with this game. It runs fine on PS3. The PC version is the best just because it has all the characters. Also digital triggers when this game wasn't meant for that.PartridgeSenpai wrote:Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed (Wii U)

Wait, why is the Wii U version of this awful? I have it on Wii U, and I absolutely love the game.Segata wrote:It's a fantastic game but the Wii U and Vita versions are awful. I have been told several times that the Wii U version is the definitive version of this game. That's why I went out of my way to get it on that console. I just think Blur is so good that it's ruined any other kart racer for me foreverElkinFencer10 wrote:Wait, why is the Wii U version of this awful? I also have the game on Wii U and think it's great. I've never really heard anyone say otherwise.

Ultimate Street Fighter II on Switch.
So 2017 has been an oddly busy and great year for games. I want a Switch and thought I will do what I always do for a new console. Save up while building up a library for a console I will eventually have. 2017 got crazier and crazier in releases and in June I knew I had to give up this year. So I canceled my Switch pre-orders and put them on a Wish list. PS4 has had an insane year and it's not done. Early 2018 doesn't look to let up. I know I could just hold off on these PS4 games and just save the money for a Switch. It's just too tempting for me to get great games for a system I already have.I know one day I will own a Switch. It's just going to be a while longer than I expected.
