who cares? I thought this thread was about a wii emulator.
True enough it's just that to me emulation is only ok when the hardware is no longer supported.

a $40 wiikey is cheaper than trying to upgrade your computer, or configure an alpha stage emulator.

Sorry if I'm being a jerk but software pirates tick me off, first they help kill the Dreamcast, and then the NEO-GEO, what's next? If they're still making the system/games then just deal with it and buy your games like everybody else.
What do you mean about the framerate being too high and HOW THE HELL DID PIRATES KILL THE NEO? The neo was one of the longest supported arcade and console platforms of all time.

You've taken a dump on this thread and didn't even provide any entertainment.

I'm in the process of grabbing Brawl to try this out on. I figure my new PC should have no issues keeping up with this and PCSX2

You have to remember that SNK officialy stated that they were ceasing development, and production of the NEO-GEO due to the rapidly increasing amount of pirated NEO-GEO carts on the market.

Also for me having said that the frame rate is too high I meant that if we're still having trouble emulating much older consoles, then how can the emulation of one that isn't even two and a half years be so smooth and accurate? It simply feels very logical.

When I play PSX games on my PS3, they look much cleaner than they did on the original hardware. I don't see how this is that much different.
Third Dreamcast shipped 20 million units by the end of its run which is the same as the original Xbox. But unlike Microsoft which bled about 15 billion dollars to market and keep the system afloat Sega didn't ever have that kind of money even in the Genesis days. Hell that's practically 2-3 times most game companies net worth at the time! Anyone who sells game or works at a game store (Like me) will tell you that companies make next to nothing off of hardware for the first few years. The real money is in software (eg. games etc..) and accessories (eg. controllers, cables, memory cards etc..) which can be produced on the cheap and quickly profited from after recouperating the small initial investment.

Also a lack of third parties? All I remember is that one or two companies jumped ship, as for EA not being there who cares? They've been a crappy company (with a few exceptions) since about 1995. They left we got the 2k franchise and other Sega made properties which were of a much higher quality than EA's offerings.

You should really check out how some of the stuf mentioned above works/operates just so you don't make a mistake by getting rid of a piece of hardware your likely to need due to incompatibility, frame rate issues etc..

The Dreamcast sold a little over 10 million units. Not sure where you got your numbers, but here's where I got mine:

There's a pretty big difference between 24 million and 10.6 million in my opinion.

Sega had developed a long streak of losing major amounts of money through the development of low selling consoles. The Dreamcast sold 10.6 million. The Sega CD sold 6 million. The Saturn sold 9.5 million. The 32X sold 200,000. Sega majored in putting out consoles that few people would buy and that were destined for early failure. Piracy didn't kill the 32X, Saturn, Sega CD or the Dreamcast; they were really dead before they even launched with company that specialized in fuck-ups at the helm.

Sega really should have stopped producing consoles after they somehow thought releasing the 32X was a good idea. They DEFINITELY should have stopped producing hardware after the disastrous and horribly botched Saturn launch. Deciding to forgo releasing the console on the release day that you have spent time building up (Saturnday anyone?) is a terrible decision. However, deciding instead to release the console four months early with almost no notice and at very limited retailers is just god damn insane. They didn't succeed in having a hit console, but they did succeed at alienating certain retailers and developers. There should have never been a follow up after that mess which ultimately ruined a pretty damned good console.

As for the Dreamcast third party support, I can see how it hurt them here in the US. No EA is a pretty big deal. Well they don't seem to be very important to you, can you honestly say that there aren't people who mainly just play Madden on their consoles? Sure the Dreamcast had a pretty damned good sports line up, but only the people who bought the console and played them probably know that; I'm sure there were plenty of people who never bought the console because Madden, Triple Play and NBA Live just weren't available on it. Also, I think not having Square was a particularly big negative to both Sega and Nintendo. Namco didn't release a title after launch except some arcade ports, despite having the most acclaimed title on the system (Soul Calibur). Yeah, a bulk of money comes from licensing software; Sega just didn't have enough software selling.

I said units shipped not sold.

Also as for you not thinking that SEGA should have given up then all I have to say is you have no Idea what the Company used to mean to me (and still does to an extent) so don't just go saying that all their ideas were bad ones. Remember mainstream online gaming, HD gaming, high capacity discs for gaming, and analog shoulder buttons all came from the Dreamcast and Saturn.

So they shipped double the amount of hardware units that they actually sold? If that's true, it's definitely a sign of a company that is deeply rooted in reality. I seriously doubt the accuracy of that number though. I think Sega definitely peaked a while ago, but I don't think they were that stupid. Then again, you work in a video game store, and everybody knows that the people who work in video game stores are the ultimate sources of video game information.

The problem with the accomplishments you listed is that the PS2 which launched a year later pretty much either matched them or trumped them all except for the online gaming. The PS2 matched the resolution, featured analog on all the major buttons on the controller and the DVD stomps the storage capacity of the GD-ROM, which actually features the lowest capacity of the three major players in that generation. I will agree that the DC was definitely progressive as far as the Internet capabilities go; there wasn't any serious competition against it until Xbox Live launched. I'm not sure that they pioneered mainstream online gaming; there were more people playing PC games online then there were playing DC games online. Online PC gaming was more mainstream and started much earlier, the DC was just the first console to try to steal some of that market.

I'm sorry that Sega has meant the world to you, and you can't stand people criticizing them. Hell, I used to love Sega in the 16-bit era. That fact just makes some of the blunders they have made even more upsetting to me.

So I was just sitting here, thinking to myself "My, I haven't heard one of those quaint little 'I love the Dreamcast and Sega and it's so horrible how it was killed early by X thing' discussions in quite a while" when I suddenly came across this thread, and, I must say, my monocle slipped right off and into my teacup. It was quite a bother.

Hmm...Wii emulation. I wondered when they would get around to that.
