Dolphin the Wii Emulator
Dolphin the Wii Emulator
Looks like it is time to sell the Wii and use the money to upgrade my computer so it can run this beast of an emulator. Check out these videos; and make sure you click 'HD'. Yes, that's right... Tatsunoko vs Capcom in HD. Super Smash Bros Brawl in HD.
For the first time in a long time, I'm actually excited about something Wii related.
I know some of you guys have some pretty impressive rigs; anybody get this to work?

I'd really like to know how good this thing is before I actually do go through with selling my Wii for a gaming rig.

Re: Dolphin the Wii Emulator
WOW, thank you for this. For about the last 8 months I haven't been able to play any Wii games given the fact that my cheating ass g/f got it when I moved out. I didn't even THINK of emulation for it. I've got a few gamecube games here at my apartment I'm gonna try with tomorrow, if they work then I'll grab my Wii games from my parent's and start trying.

Re: Dolphin the Wii Emulator
1. The frame rate is impossibly high.
2. If you already own a Wii then why emulate?
5. Wii games are affordable and in good supply.
6. See Above.
Sorry if I'm being a jerk but software pirates tick me off, first they help kill the Dreamcast, and then the NEO-GEO, what's next? If they're still making the system/games then just deal with it and buy your games like everybody else.

Re: Dolphin the Wii Emulator
Heh, yeah, the good ol' "Piracy killed the Dreamcast" bit. Sega loved to play that up so that people would forget about the dept they accumulated with the 32X, Sega CD and Sega Saturn, not to mention lack of Electronic Arts support, as well as the inevitable hype-machine that was the PS2.
I want it because of the HD resolution. You put a Wii on HD, and it looks like a sloppy mess. This emulator runs at 720. IF I could simply mod the Wii to run HD, I'd do that. It's a lot friggin' easier. But I can't. So, there you have it.
Also, I'd ONLY be selling the Wii. I'm not getting rid of the games that I already have. I never sell games. (Well, games I give a shit about. So, I'll definately be hanging on to SSBB, Wario Ware, Metal Slug and Mario Galaxy. The rest of my Wii collection is largely expendable.)
And while we're at it, how many pirates would it take to kill the Wii? From what I hear, every NDS in Japan has an M4 in it, and yet the DS seems to be making a killing over there.

Re: Dolphin the Wii Emulator
1. Did I say that piracy was the only thing that killed the Dreamcast? First I don't ever remember SEGA mentioning piracy until long after they had respectfully bowed out of the market. Second you have to remember that SEGA was doing badly reputation-wise, financially they had taken a hit but were stable at the time of the PS2's release. As said by SEGA themselves had global saturation of the Dreamcast been slightly higher then they would have kept the hardware side of the compny alive via a niche market like the Saturn hd enjoyed in Japan. Eventually they did begin catering to said market but only in Japan as it was the only location with such a high install base of Dreamcast owners.the7k wrote:Heh, yeah, the good ol' "Piracy killed the Dreamcast" bit. 2. Is your Wii set to 480p & on component cables ? Because mine is and it looks great on my 1080i JVC.
3. Just because something desplays at 720p doesn't mean it's programmed at 720p. Last time I checked all Wii games are programmed in 480p (With the exception of a few titles which are 480i (Metal Slug, & KOF: Orochi Saga come to mind) that have the Wii upconvert the video to 480p before it exits.)
Sorry but if your TV 720p? 1080i? etc... makes it look like crap its still gonna look like crap just slightly jaggier from double upconversion.
In the end you have to remember that a signal at whatever resolution will still be that resolution reguardless of whatever upconversion is applied software/hardware etc.. That means it'll still be just as grainy or jaggy etc.. just slightly more muddled and laggy.

I have to agree. You aren't going to get more information out of the disc then what is there already. Plus, tatsunoko vs capcom looks just as good as that video running on my 1080p hd set with component cables.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: 3. Also- with soft modding around for the wii, and the insane popularity of the console being in a ton of homes- i can't see many people really using the emulator.
Don't get me wrong- i love this stuff. Emulation- tech, its all good. And i'm sure i'll try out the emulator at some point- or else at least use it down the line when i want to retire the wii from the big screen. I just don't see the hd bonus like you do i guess? What i'm excited for is the next generation of consoles and porting the emulator to them. Stuff like that.
Re: Dolphin the Wii Emulator
Well, sorry man. It just ticks me off when I hear people blame piracy for the fall of the Dreamcast. Piracy certainly didn't help, but had next to nothing to do with the Dreamcast's downfall.
Dreamcast failed because they didn't sell enough systems; If people really were pirating Dreamcast games enough to make the console fail, then they would have sold tons of systems but no games. That's not the case. People didn't buy the Dreamcast because Sega pulled the plug prematurely on the Saturn, which made people speculate that Sega wouldn't stay in the game. Pulling the plug on the Saturn also pissed off a lot of third parties, most notably EA. Finally, just the announcements of the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube was enough to convince consumers that Sega just couldn't compete.
Also, my Wii is connected through component cables, and it still looks like ass. Specifically, it looks very blurry. The Wii looks much better connected to an SDTV through composite cables than an HDTV with component cables.
Yes, I know that these games weren't meant to be viewed this way, but... so what? Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid weren't programmed to be on the Dreamcast, and yet we saw how much better they looked Bleemed on that system as opposed to the PSX. When I play PSX games on my PS3, they look much cleaner than they did on the original hardware. I don't see how this is that much different.

First off when you have your component cables connected you still need to set up your Wii to output a 480p signal through the options menu. If you don't then it'll look like crap on most HDTV's.the7k wrote:Well, sorry man. It just ticks me off when I hear people blame piracy for the fall of the Dreamcast. Secondly the reaso games looked so good on Bleemcast was because of high resolution texture packs and polygon doublers programmed for each individual game. Hence why different versions of Bleemcast! are required for each game.
Third Dreamcast shipped 20 million units by the end of its run which is the same as the original Xbox. But unlike Microsoft which bled about 15 billion dollars to market and keep the system afloat Sega didn't ever have that kind of money even in the Genesis days. Hell that's practically 2-3 times most game companies net worth at the time! Anyone who sells game or works at a game store (Like me) will tell you that companies make next to nothing off of hardware for the first few years. The real money is in software (eg. games etc..) and accessories (eg. controllers, cables, memory cards etc..) which can be produced on the cheap and quickly profited from after recouperating the small initial investment.
Also a lack of third parties? All I remember is that one or two companies jumped ship, as for EA not being there who cares? They've been a crappy company (with a few exceptions) since about 1995. They left we got the 2k franchise and other Sega made properties which were of a much higher quality than EA's offerings.
You should really check out how some of the stuf mentioned above works/operates just so you don't make a mistake by getting rid of a piece of hardware your likely to need due to incompatibility, frame rate issues etc..
You also may want to learn how the gaming/software industry works before you begin just randomly saying that pirates don't hurt and change the industry for the worst.
