I have no idea how hard The Last of Us is on easy, but I definitely died a bit in it on normal. I'm not a stealth/third-person-shooter guru either. Evidenced by my deaths in Vanquish recently, I suppose. (Actually, I'm curious as to everyone else's death in that game, maybe I'm not that terrible? But probably I am.
July Jabberwocky Challenge - CANCELED
Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
Well, there is the fact that, despite being a mainstream title, the Mario games actually tend to be somewhat technical in nature. I don't personally like the physics of the cape, either, which is cool but not nearly as easy to handle as the raccoon tail.

I disagree with this, but I've also been playing Mario games since the late 80s, where I had to stand on a stool to reach the arcade joystick.alienjesus wrote: True facts, I think all 3 nes mario games are harder than like 50% of the rest of your list. People well practised in those games greatly underestimate their difficulty imo. Mario games are way harder than Mega Man
Of the NES trio, I'd say the first is unquestionably difficult. The other two offer up more opportunities for extra lives, there's a continue system, and simply much more "wiggle room" overall.
Someone should try Spike's Peak, which is regarded as one of the most difficult Atari 2600 games. I finished it last year, but I'm honestly not quite sure how. In a stroke of luck it just kinda "happened."

I was thinking about listing Kaboom! here, but I learned my lesson...

Well, yeah, as far as I know this thread is about difficult games not impossible ones.

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
I am on the road today for my job, so I haven't been able to keep up with this thread properly. But from what I can tell, I think we're at 10 participants now:
CFFJR
dsheinem
Exhuminator
Fastbilly
Jmustang1968
Kuruwin
Laurenhiya21
Prfsnl_gmr
Sarge
strangenova
Which is enough participants to get this event started.
Hopefully more folks will join in throughout May and June.
What I plan to do now is clean the OP up and make it easier to read and understand. Registration and rules will be spelled out more clearly and succinctly. I also plan to send the judges PMs so we can hammer out how to proceed in a coordinated fashion.
I won't have time to do all that today. I should have time tomorrow to do all of that.
In the meantime, anybody who wants to join, just post saying so. You can also post a list of proposed games. If you need help finding potential old challenging games to play, just say so with a list of preferred platforms and genres.

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
Turtles is definitely hard. I played through with save states on my Retron 5 just to see what it has to offer and it gets insanely difficult toward the end. You'll be bashing your head against the wall.Jmustang1968 wrote:Did you consider me? I thought I had thrown my hat in.
Some I am considering
1. Turtles - NES
2. Robocop vs Terminator - Genesis
3. Was thinking one of the Super Star Wars games SNES
4. Contra III - SNES
5. Demon's Crest SNES
This idea is fun but I think it is pretty difficult to judge, if not impossible. People have different skills, and some people are better or worse at particular genres. To me, Contra and Gunstar Heroes are impossible because I stink at that kind of game. But Mario games are hard to some people and they're a breeze to me; I once beat Mario World without collecting a power-up or continuing (I may have died once or twice, can't remember anymore).
That said, here are a few recommendations:
Batman (NES)
Gargoyles (Genesis)
Cool Spot (Genesis)
Sonic Spinball (Genesis)
I won't be participating actively, but I might make trying to beat one or more of the above a personal goal if I have the time.

Just an FYI, it won't work on a Genesis model 3 or a Retron 5 (yet, hopefully they address it at some point).Jmustang1968 wrote:Ooh I did just pick up a copy of Gargoyles a couple of weeks ago.
It has great sound and graphics, and it could be a classic if they had just polished it more. I came pretty close to beating it last time I played but ran out of lives in the last stage.

Good to know on the R5, but I will also have a model 1 hooked up in my new game room.ESauced wrote:Just an FYI, it won't work on a Genesis model 3 or a Retron 5 (yet, hopefully they address it at some point).Jmustang1968 wrote:Ooh I did just pick up a copy of Gargoyles a couple of weeks ago.

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
Thanks for the suggestions and comments. Bucky O'Hare might be kinda against the concept but i don't have much experience with these sort of games so i don't want to overwhelm myself.
Bucky O'Hare
Power Blade
Mega Man 2
Chip 'n Dale was/is on my summer challenge list but i figured someone would say that it's too easy. I tested a bit a while back and it didn't seem that easy to me but i guess that just might mean that i suck at these type of games. Power Blade stays.
