I don't have a preference for picking the judges, but it should be noted that Ack can't be trusted on general principal.
July Jabberwocky Challenge - CANCELED

I'll join in. I have a couple of titles in mind.

My 2 cents:prfsnl_gmr wrote:I'm in.
Ecco the Dolphin = Challenging, or so I've been told. I was gonna put this on my list.
The Guardian Legend = Challenging.
RBI Baseball = Nah.
Gate of Thunder = Challenging.
Lords of Thunder = Challenging.
Perfect Dark = Nah.
Some of the games in your list might not be considered challenging by gamers who've already beaten them over and over. But they have to remember what those games are like the first time you play them as a newbie. And this is why we need more than one judge! Personally I'm not looking for people to beat games like I Wanna be the Guy or Super Meat Boy anything. This isn't about XTREME HARDCORE. Just retro stuff that actually takes legit effort to beat, enough that you'll have to practice and git gud to do it.

Alright, I think we're up to four five six participants thus far?:

The more the merrier, of course. But at least six five four more and we can call this an actual event.
Also, every contestant needs to say whether they want to vote for judges or just let me pick them.

I'll bite. I'm sitting out of the summer games but I think I can manage this.
I'll default to your judgement on judges Ex.

I'm not gonna participate but this will be a fun thread to monitor.
Just a tip for those trying to think of games...
GameFAQs has user-submitted difficulty rankings.
Here's NES/Famicom, for example:
https://www.gamefaqs.com/games/rankings ... in_votes=0
Genesis:
https://www.gamefaqs.com/games/rankings ... in_votes=0
SNES:
https://www.gamefaqs.com/games/rankings ... in_votes=0
(The list changes if you adjust the "min. vote" count, though I find it to be less accurate at the extremes. At least for the "mainstream" consoles.)

I will defer on Ecco...but Lords is a super-easy shmup (as the genre goes) and Gate, while harder, is certainly not a difficult shmup.
I would think that most arcade titles (or ones in an arcade genre) should be subject to difficulty comparisons within their genre, as otherwise judges would have to constantly have to defend against the argument that all arcade titles are challenging, so they should all count, etc.
R-Type Delta is a hard shmup, so that would be a good pick (though I know you already played it). If you bested that (or almost bested it) the Thunder games will be a comparative walk in the park.

I'll come up with three for me at some point, I'm in.

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
For the record, it took me about ten hours of continuous play with unlimited credits(!) to finally beat R-Type Delta. It is a beast.
What about Legacy of the Wizard, The Goonies II, or F-Zero X? I am trying to come up with old, difficult games that I haven't beaten and aren't difficult due only to antiquated (or broken) mechanics.
EDIT: I can't wait to read what Sarge picks...

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
I think I might go for a legit run of Ghouls 'N' Ghosts for one of mine.
I might also try to do a legit run of Life Force. It's a bit outside my comfort zone, but I've heard it's more fair than Gradius.
It may also be time for me to actually beat one of the "traditional" NES Adventure Island games. I hear the first one, in particular, is brutal.
prf, I'd say all of those are tough, if I were sitting upon my judging throne.

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
I am happy to be the judges' judge if either Exhum or the people ask it.
Also don't bother with GameFAQs difficulty ratings. The vast majority of people on there couldn't play their way out of a wet paper bag.

Re: July Jabberwocky Challenge (conceptual stage)
Really? I find Lords harder than Gate, though mostly because of Lords's final boss.
