Reminiscing upon the 3DS' bittersweet sunset.

ImageNINTENDO 3DS | 2011 - 2017(?)Image

Well folks although there are still some 3DS games on the horizon (some of which will leave Japan and be localized), I think it's safe to say that 2017 is the final hurrah for this handheld. Maybe I'm wrong and the 3DS will continue on to 2026 just to spite me, but looking at past Nintendo handheld lifespans... I think the ol' 3DS will be lead out to pasture soon enough.

So in regards to that possibility, I thought it'd be nice to take a minute and reflect on our collective personal experiences with the handheld thus far. I created a poll to garner some initial feedback, but here's 20 other questions to stir the pot (answer as many or as little as you prefer, this is just conversation kindle):
If you don't own a 3DS why not?

If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?

What year did you buy a 3DS?

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?

What were some of the first games you bought and played?

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?

Howabout that region locking bro?

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?
I'll be back with my own answers later.

What year did you buy a 3DS?
December of 2011 (so after the first price drop).

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?
The Dragon Quest titles (that was a fun wait), Super Mario 3D Land, Ocarnia of Time 3D, and Star Fox 64 3D.

What were some of the first games you bought and played?
I got the Zelda 25th Anniversery 3DS, so I first played Ocarnia of Time 3D since it was packaged with it (I've never actually beaten it because I put it down for a long while and then the L button broke :( )

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?
According to the Activity Log, that would be Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?
I wouldn't say really excited, but the new Yo-kai Watch game seems like a good point for me to jump into that series.

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?
It is more powerful than the DS in terms of hardware, so yes. The 3D effect was neat but I feel like it didn't really offer much to developers besides being cool. The circle pad never gave me any problems until my 3DS really got worn down and the circle pad's nub came off and disappeared.

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?
I like to keep it on.

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?
Considering that my current 3DS is on it's last legs, I think I would love it.

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?
No, I am not a huge fan of the genre and there are other metroidvania type games on other systems I could play if I ever got an itch for it.

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?
Punch-Out!! I remember reading an issue of Nintendo Power talking about some kind of demo (or something along those lines) of the original NES game with a 3D effect, which makes me sad the series never got a new 3DS game or even having the NES game get a 3D Classics release instead of the basic Virtual Console release.

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?
Shoulder buttons that don't break as easily (maybe I'm just too rough with my DS systems).

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?
While it didn't do as well as the DS did, I think Nintendo had a very good run with the system.

How about that region locking bro?
I'm glad Nintendo made the Switch region free.

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?
I only own the Zelda 25th Anniversary Edition 3DS, which isn't doing so well cosmetically after all these years.

Exhuminator wrote: If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?

I own:
Original 3DS (black) - I got this at launch, and liked the black colour mroe than the metallic blue.

3DS XL (smash bros.) - I got this when the L button on my original 3DS broke, and Smash Bros. was about to come out.

New 3DS XL (Majora's Mask) - I got this one after it was announced on the Nintendo Direct, partly because it looked awesome, and partly because I was wanted the higher performance of the new 3DS.

What year did you buy a 3DS?
I got mine at launch. The original DS is my favourite game system of all time, so it was a no-brainer for me to get the follow up.

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?
Nope. In fact, the launch line-up was pretty bad. I got mine with Pilotwings Resort, which I liked well enough. My next game was Dead or Alive Dimensions which I got a ton of playtime out of.

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?
Nope, but I have the New 3DS now so I don't need it. It always looked incredibly cumbersome and uncomfortable to use the Circle Pad Pro anyway.

What were some of the first games you bought and played?
Pilotwings Resort and Dead or Alive Dimensions were my first 2, as I mentioned before. I'm not actually sure what was next though!

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?
The most recent one I bought myself would be Pokémon Sun, but I got a bunch for my Birthday & Christmas last year too - Sega 3D Classics Collection, Rhythm Paradise Megamix, Project X Zone 2 & Hyrule Warriors Legends. I have Fire Emblem Echoes on order.

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?
I know for a fact that it is Pokémon Shuffle. It's a free-to-play puzzle game which resembles Candy Crush, but it's also just the right length to play on my daily commute to work, so it has had a solid 20-40 minutes of play pretty much daily for 2 years. If we're going with something more meaty, it's probably also a Pokémon game - Pokémon Y.

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?
I'm looking forward to Hey, Pikmin! and I reckon the new Kirby game will be fun too. I have the new Fire Emblem on order. I'm excited for Lady Layton being localised too. There's a lot of RPGs on the way though, and whilst I like me some RPGs I'm not sure I have the time to play them! My RPG backlog is big enough as is.

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?
The download games via eShop are generally way better than DSiWare? Otherwise, eh, not really. I love the 3DS, but the DS has a library I think is very hard to surpass.

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?
I tend to keep it turned on, I quite like it.

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?
It's an unnecessary purchase generally, but it makes a big enough difference on the few games that use it that I don't regret buying one. Saves using that dumb Circle Pad Pro too.

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?
No, because I am a grown adult who is able to come to terms with these things. Also, there's plenmty of other great games to play anyway.

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?
F-Zero woulda been near the top of the list. I think that woulda been cool in 3D. Sin and Punishment woulda been great too, but Kid Icarus Uprising is kinda like that anyway. Maybe a Punch-Out game woulda been cool? Or a more conventional Chibi-Robo game, but frankly I always feel lucky that he still shows up at all. Otherwise I'm not sure - Most major Nintendo franchises have releases on the system anyway.

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?
Longer battery life would be nice? Not a big deal though. Echoing the above sentiment that more reliable shoulder buttons would be nice too though

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?
I mean, I'm working in a different market to you guys, and the UK has always been a tough one for Nintendo anyhow. I enjoyed the stuff that Nintendo put out for the system, but it's kinda surprising the relative lack of 3rd party support, considering just how much their previous handhelds had.

Howabout that region locking bro?
Region locking on handhelds sucks, but there's very little that comes to mind as something I've missed out on due to region locking. My question back to you - can you think of any notable US or JP imports I've missed out on as a result of region locking on 3DS, that is playable in English?

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?
 Zero, but I fully intend to pick it up and play it, and I suspect it will be fun in it's own way. Next Level Games are generally pretty decent.

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?
3

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?
Showing off the 3D effects to people in my Uni class will stand out. The first time I streetpassed someone too. Also, spinning on my computer chair just after buying it from the launch event playing Face Raiders and AR games.

I don't know about English games that USA got which EU didn't get. But there have been notable Japanese 3DS games that neither western region has received (that is to say these 3DS games remain Japanese only). I know you're looking for Japanese games you can play in English. I don't know about any of those. But there are plenty of Japanese only 3DS games I wish we would have gotten:
Image
Labyrinth no Kanata by Tri-Ace

Image
E.X. Troopers by Capcom

Image
Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken by Capcom
(Its sequel is Japanese only as well.)

Image
Gaist Crusher God by Capcom

Image
Seisou no Amazones by Arc System Works

Image
Time Travelers by Level 5

Those are just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more.
Hopefully someday ROM hackers will make those playable in English via emulation.

If you don't own a 3DS why not?
N/A

If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?
I own the Black launch one, dont really prefer one color combo over another

What year did you buy a 3DS?
I was given one for services rendered in June of 2011 with OOT

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?
OOT3d was the reason I was interested at the time, I still had plenty of DS games to get through.

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?
Nope

What were some of the first games you bought and played?
OOT3d, Ambassador VC games, Heroes of Ruin

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?
Probably Pokemon Y

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?
Pokemon Y

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?
Boxy

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?
For alot of people, it probably did. For me personally, the DS came out at a time when I was traveling alot more with like minded people, so it was more pivotal since it was used more.

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?
Works great on the New 3ds, does not work so well on the launch one. So I leave it off
What's your opinion of the New 3DS?

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?
N/A

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?
Earthbound

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?
Better shoulder buttons

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?
Aswell as you could hope

Howabout that region locking bro?
Pointless but other than a few titles it never got in the way.

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?
0

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?
1

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?
First time I used the 3d it was pretty incredible.

Some of those I haven't heard of (and will be researching later), and some I wish we could have got, but either way I'd need someone to create the translation which means emulation or some kinda of software hack or something - which avoids the whole region locking issue.

I would have liked the 3rd Game Center CX game too, which I imagine is mostly playable without knowing Japanese.

If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?
I got the original black 3DS back on launch day, but then the D pad started fucking up THE DAY THAT POKEMON X AND Y CAME OUT so I went and impulse bought one of the blue Pokemon X/Y XLs, but I let a friend borrow it and his bitch ass aunt's girlfriend stole it, but that wasn't the end of the world because I had already bought a black New 3DS XL by that point because added power plus control nub but mainly more stable 3D.

What year did you buy a 3DS?
I bought an original 3DS in 2011, then I bought my Pokemon 3DS XL in 2013, then I bought my New 3DS XL in 2015

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?
Nope. I'm just a Nintendo fanboy.

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?
Nope. Just got a New 3DS instead. Unfortunately that circle nub is a piece of shit IMO.

What were some of the first games you bought and played?
Despite having the system at launch, the first retail game I bought wasn't until Resident Evil: Revelations several months later. I bought some a handful of eShop games before that, but I don't remember what I bought when.

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?
Pokemon X, most definitely.

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?
Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valencia

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?
I think in the range of genres it could do well, yes, given the added power and option of a second control stick, but in general, I think the DS was the better and more innovative system.

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?
Turn that shit to max, brah.

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?
I generally dislike "boosted" revisions (DSi, New 3DS, PS4 Pro, etc), but the added umph helps a few games, and the more stable 3D is a VERY welcome change.

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?
Not really because I have most platforms, but it certainly would have been nice.

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?
Metroid. Federation Force doesn't count.

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?
A higher resolution screen

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?
Initially, no. The introductory price was too steep, and while I was perfectly content with their Ambassador hoohah, I can certainly see how early adopters could have felt seriously shafted.

How about that region locking bro?
Fuck that shit. Kimishima-san ftw for ditching that bullshit.

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?
Go fuck yourself.

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?
Right now, just the black New 3DS XL. I gave my launch 3DS to a friend (after I fixed the D pad) for her birthday, and my friend's aunt's bitch-ass girlfriend stole my Pokemon 3DS XL.

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?
Either my "holy shit" moment at Resident Evil: Revelation's fog effects or my 90 hours of "holy shit" at Shin Megami Tensei IV.

If you don't own a 3DS why not?

I does own a 3DS.

If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?

The 3DS XL Blue/Black is nice. I like the color scheme, and the screen is plenty big. Although I use a special grip with it to make the thing more ergonomic.

What year did you buy a 3DS?

I bought one (the Blue/Black 3DS XL) in 2013 at a Walmart of all places.

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?

Yep. Resident Evil: Revelations. I was determined to see a certain derriere via the 3D effect:
Image
Sorry folks, I am a simple man.

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?

No, it looked like a cumbersome band-aid.

What were some of the first games you bought and played?

Resident Evil: Revelations and Etrian Odyssey Untold.

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?

Monster Hunter Generations.

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?

I spent 115 hours on Etrian Odyssey Untold. Because I beat Story Mode (it's longer than Classic Mode) on Expert, and without a strategy guide. I'd never played an Etrian Odyssey game before and had no idea what I was doing. It's clear from Untold (and Untold 2's) HLTB completion aggregates that most people beat it (and its sequel) on Standard difficulty.

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?

Of the ones that have been confirmed; Ever Oasis. But we better get Dragon Quest XI damn it.

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?

Having an analog thumb slider is a big boost to moving characters in 3D worlds. That was something the DS didn't have, and it made some games uncomfortable to play (I'm looking at you Super Mario 64 DS).

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?

For action games I typically leave it at 75% on. For long text heavy RPGs or adventure games, I turn the 3D effect off. It starts to bug my eyes after an hour or so. I bought a 2DS specifically for playing RPGs and adventure games.

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?

A money milking spit in the face towards 3DS early adopters. Thankfully very few 3DS games actually require it. I guess it's cool the 3D effect works better on it for most people. I personally have no problem enjoying the 3D effect on my original 3DS XL, so it's a moot point for me.

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?

YES. I have cut my own head off three times over this travesty of travesties.

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?

My knee jerk reaction is to say F-Zero. But upon deeper reflection, an epic sized Endless Ocean sequel would have been marvelous. Diving around with the 3D effect would just be pure bliss. Add in deeper RPG systems and a more plot heavy narrative lasting about 30 hours, and I would have been ecstatic.

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?

Definitely a higher resolution on the top screen. The Vita's resolution makes the 3DS' look like a joke.

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?

Initially Nintendo did a terrible job introducing the 3DS to the USA. The original 3DS handheld itself was ugly, too expensive, and made of tissue paper apparently. Once the 3DS XL came out and a price cut happened, things started to turn around.

Howabout that region locking bro?

Region locking is a cardinal sin, period.

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?

Not even once. It was a game nobody asked for and nobody wanted. I personally never bought it and I never will. I hope Nintendo learned a lesson from that mistake.

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?

I own a Blue/Black 3DS XL and an Electric Blue 2DS.

Also I'd like to say the 2DS is a great way to play 3DS games, if you don't care about the 3D effect. The 2DS is a very comfortable system to hold and play. I just wish the 2DS had an XL version.

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?

Probably playing Super Mario 3D Land and realizing the 3D effect could actually be useful, instead of just a gimmick. Or maybe all the nights I spent desperately fighting and dying to Untold's rage inducing bosses. Also Jill's ass. 8)

If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?

I have a red and black 3DS XL. I used to have an original 3DS that I sold to upgrade to the XL. Figured I'd save myself some eye strain. I'd love a "New" model, but don't think it's worth dropping the cash again. I'll also note that the first 3DS I got had a dead pixel right toward the center of the screen, but only on one screen. Dead pixels in 3D are disconcerting.

What year did you buy a 3DS?

Not sure what year it was when they did the price drop, but that's when I bought mine. Walmart dropped it ahead of the deadline for getting the Ambassador games, so I have those.

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?

I'd already been eyeballing it, but it was a little pricey for me to jump on. I did want to play the OoT remake, so that got snagged at... well, you know.

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?

Yes, the XL. But I didn't use it a whole lot. It's a little large and ungainly in my opinion.

What were some of the first games you bought and played?

The aforementioned OoT, and I'm pretty sure the next big title I got was Super Mario 3D Land. I had a couple of other games, like Dream Trigger 3D, Rayman 3D, and Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, the last of which was gifted, the others picked up very cheaply.

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?

SMT Devil Survivor: Overclocked.

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?

Definitely Bravely Default. Over 80 hours.

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?

I think I'm interested in Ever Oasis. I still want the Fire Emblem games, despite having barely touched Awakening and not done the split release of the last one.

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?

That's a hard question to answer, honestly. I think for 3D stuff, absolutely. And I don't mean the effect, I just mean the general increase in horsepower makes things look really nice compared to the PSX-level effects on the original. That being said, there were more 2D games that I thought looked splendid on DS. It's probably a wash.

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?

I enjoy it sometimes, and sometimes I turn it off. The older models require you to stay in that sweet spot, which can get a little old at times. I tend to move around some while playing. That said, I did play through the entirety of Mirror of Fate in 3D, and the Kirby games almost always have the 3D on because they utilize it so well.

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?

I sorta hit that earlier. I want one, but I don't $200-want one. The more stable 3D is legit, though.

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?

Well, technically Mirror of Fate follows that structure, it's just not as tightly designed. I think it's still got my record for average playtime, though, at 2.5 hours per session.

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?

Ooh. That's a tough one. (No it's not. Metroid. Metroid Metroid METROID. Federation Force doesn't count.)

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?

Probably what they fixed with the New model, the head tracking / stable 3D.

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?

Yeah, I think so.

Howabout that region locking bro?

Not as fun coming off the 3DS, but it never really bothered me 'cause there weren't any major titles that I really wanted to import. Unless y'all can point out something awesome that I'm missing.

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?

Noooooope.

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?

Just the XL.

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?

Probably that first week with the 3D effect without glasses on a small screen. That was a seriously impressive trick, even if it doesn't hold up as well over time.

But there have been notable Japanese 3DS games that neither western region has received (that is to say these 3DS games remain Japanese only). I know you're looking for Japanese games you can play in English. I don't know about any of those. But there are plenty of Japanese only 3DS games I wish we would have gotten:

Games

Hopefully someday ROM hackers will make those playable in English via emulation.
Fun facts about a few of those "games":
EX Troopers is actually on PS3 as well! I'm not sure if there are any differences between them, but it's still a very easily importable game in that form.

Gaist Crusher God isn't a Capcom game: They just published it. It's actually Treasure's most recent game! I've only played the original Gaist Crusher so far, but it's pretty decent 3D brawling fun (it ain't no Yakuza though :P ).

If you own a 3DS, what model/color variation do you prefer (explain why)?

The 3DS XL. I've used every model (except the normal NEW 3DS), and while the NEW XL and the old one may be almost the same, there's one difference that has made me prefer the XL in certain situations: The stylus is about a quarter of an inch longer. That quarter of an inch makes it a LOT more comfortable to hold in my hand, so I always use the XL for any stylus-heavy game. The XL naaaarrowly beats out its younger brother for this small reason.

What year did you buy a 3DS?

2011. This was the only console I've ever bought near or around launch. The shoulder buttons on the originals really weren't built to last though, so it was replaced by a NEW one around the time they came out.

Was there a particular game that made you want to buy it?

I kinda wanna say seeing the concepts for Animal Crossing and Paper Mario in Nintendo Power influenced my decision a bit, but I can't remember for sure. This is also the only console I've ever bought just because I loved the previous one and just felt I HAD to have the new one.

Did you buy and utilize the Circle Pad Pro?

Naw, although I kinda wish I did. I really don't dig the weird right D-nub on the NEW, so I've wanted to see if the CPP plays any better (which I assume it does). That analog nub certainly made RE:Revelations a lot harder than it had to be, because it REALLY didn't like being used for long periods of time for some reason. My fault for beating the game in 2 or 3 days I guess :P

What were some of the first games you bought and played?

The Ocarina of Time remake and Kid Icarus. I enjoyed them both well enough, but really kept on playing DS games for quite a while because there are (still) so many good ones I haven't played.

What's the most recent 3DS game you bought?

Rhythm Haven: Mega Mix! It hasn't come in the mail yet though. Me wait very patiently for it :|

What 3DS game do you think you spent the most amount of time with?

Not sure. I'd have to check my activity log, but I don't have my 3DS on me right now to do that. I'm fairly positive most of my most-played games on there are normal 3DS games though. Pokemon Heart Gold and Dragon Quest VI got a LOT of playtime back in highschool. If I could combine the Fates games into one total game-time though, I'd guess that probably is near the top.

Any upcoming 3DS games you are really excited for?

Ever Oasis and that Tank game (whose title escapes me) both look loads of fun. Still a good handful of older ones I need though, so who knows when I'll get to them.

Do you think the 3DS surpassed the DS in any way(s)?

Graphics and power-wise, yes, as well as just the general size games could be. Even if it weren't 3D, I think just keeping the DS until the Switch (assuming that's how Nintendo would've gone) would've been REALLY skimping on power for no real reason.

Do you enjoy the 3D effect, or do you turn it off?

I'm a massive worry-wart about battery life, so I turned it off pretty soon after I got it and only turned it back on occasionally if a game seemed like it was taking the piss with it (like Rocket Slime 3 kinda does).

What's your opinion of the New 3DS?

A wasted opportunity! WHY IS THE SECOND JOYSTICK SO SMALL!?! It could've easily been full sized :? . It is nice to have Xenoblade portable though. It makes the game way more playable for me. A necessary revision? Not really. If the XL had never existed, then that opinion would be different, because the original version was really small and had poor build quality in some areas (like shoulder buttons (RIP my OG 3DS ;_; )). I don't think Nintendo ever really justified the existence of the NEW one otherwise (although the changeable back-plates were cool, even though we never got 'em ;A;).

Does it make you want to cut yourself that we never got any official metroidvanias for 3DS?

Naw. It mostly just makes me laugh because Exhumy Senpai is so eternally salty about it

If you could have magically made Nintendo create a 3DS game from any of its existing franchises (which didn't receive a 3DS game), which franchise would you have made a 3DS game from?

I would've loved a new Wario action game. I freakin' love all of 'em, so not havin' any since Shake It on the Wii has been a bit of a bummer :?

If you were able to make one improvement to the 3DS, what would it have been?

MAKE THE NEW 3DS HAVE A NORMAL SIZED SECOND JOYSTICK. Seriously. Why the fuck isn't there one? Just put it below the buttons!

Do you think Nintendo did a good job handling the 3DS domestically?

I assume you mean "In America/the country I'm in," because really what's "domestic" for Nintendo is Japan  .

I think they did fair enough. There's a few things I would've liked physical editions for that we only got digitally, but games are a business at the end of the day, so I can understand why we didn't get 'em. There's nothing that never came out over here without an understandable enough reason why (Retro Game Challenge 3 probably couldn't find a publisher just like 2 couldn't, Gaist Crusher had a ton of anime tie-ins there's no way they would've spent the time to import, Youkai Watch Busters was fun and silly but actual Youkai Watch wasn't popular enough over here, etc.). They did about as well as any other recent console has. It's certainly not a PS1/2 or SNES situation where there's just a TON of great games that never made it over here.

Howabout that region locking bro?

A right, proper ball-ache, innit? I'm just lucky I was able to get such a good deal on a Japanese XL so I could get physical editions of ones I wanted as well as ones I just wanted to play the Japanese translations of (like FE: Fates). Glad they backed off of it for the Switch. I wonder what made them suddenly about-face like that when all the other handhelds they've done have been region-free? O.o

How many times have beaten Metroid Prime: Federation Force?

(see above laughter and reason for said laughter)

How many variants of the 3DS do you own?

I have two, my bronze American NEW XL, and my blue Japanese XL. I even had my old aqua normal one as a third at one point (which was turned into a gift for a friend, eventually (which was then regifted AGAIN after that! It's the gift 3DS that keeps on giving!).

Twenty years from now if you sat back and remembered the 3DS, what nostalgic moment would be most prominent?

Probably falling in love with Youkai Watch after dismissing it for so long. Those games are so fun, and have really gotten me back into that style of game when I thought I'd gotten sick of Pokemon and games like it forever.

Here's a new question:
What was your favorite eShop-only title for the 3DS?

It's very very close between BOXBOY and Alien on the Run for me. Perhaps that will change once I finally get to BOXBOXBOY and Goodbye BOXBOY, though.
