PSP GO+Cradle+TV cables+Dualshock 3=Amazing PS1 experience

While the PSP Go is widely considered the black sheep of the PSP family due to it not supporting physical media and not using the same memory stick as its predecessors, I find it has a couple of version specific features that make up for this.

First, it does have a single savestate that can be used for PSP and your downloaded PS1 games. While it would be nice to have a savestate per game, one is better than nothing, especially when most PS1 games were not designed with mobile play in mind.

Second, the PSP Go supports bluetooth. This did allow using a bluetooth headset for Skype and I think a couple of SOCOM titles, but the real standout is Dualshock 3/Sixaxis support. You have to use a PS3 to sync them together, but the program motioninjoy for windows also claims that it can do it for you. I did not have any luck with motioninjoy and ended up going over to a buddys house and using his PS3. Took only a few minutes.

The PSP Go also has 16gb of built in storage. This doesn't completely solve the replacement memory stick issue, but it helps.

The Cradle can be found for much cheaper on ebay. I gave amazon links just so you know what you are looking for if you decide to do this yourself.

With the cradle it supports having the tv out cable connected at the same time as the PSP 1000 charger, so you can use the TV out feature and charge the system at the same time. The cradle is not a necessary thing but nobody wants to stop gaming to charge the system, since it only has one connection for charging/tv out.

Some might wonder why in the title I say this makes for a great PS1 experience. PSP games displayed on a TV will crop and usually end up as a small rectangle in the middle of your screen, while PS1 games will display in full 4:3 aspect ratio. Or I guess you could stretch the image to 16:9 if you are nasty like that.......

Also with the Dualshock 3 you regain support for 2 joystick analogue controls, 4 shoulder buttons and even the L3/R3 joystick buttons! This makes many PS1 games that would be otherwise unplayable on a PSP, playable once again.

Some might make a comparison to a certain Nintendo system thats coming out in March.....

I have this setup and use it fairly regularly, so feel free to ask some questions guys.

TL;DR - A PSP go with tv out cables and a dualshock 3 is alot like a nintendo switch!

This is some useful information. I do have TV out cables for PSP-2000\3000 and they work well but the resolution is capped. Black bars all around, though I don't recall if a zoom function was available. PS1 classics work out better however, similar to your experience here.

As a Go owner myself I realized the system was too advanced for it's time. It was small, had built-in storage, wi-fi and bluetooth connectivity, expandable memory, save states, and in Japan, a camera and GPS.

Lately I have been going down the 240p rabbit hole and have realized that the PSPgo supports 240p over component cables! It behaves exactly like a ps1 with games that switch back and forth between 240 and 480i working as intended. 480i native games like Tekken 3 and Ergheiz running perfectly too.

Hasn't the PSTV basically replicated all these features and more, though? That seems the better route to go if you want to play PSP/PS1 stuff from the PSN on your TV...cheaper, too.

Well I think a big part of it is the Vita has no TV out, while at the end of the day the Go is still a portable system. You would have to own both a PSTV and Vita to get the same experience as this, which would cost more, and even then you would still have to move over your memory card for downloads and saves. Or backup to PSN I guess.

Plus the PSTV is hdmi only so no 240p signal over component on a CRT.

Most LCD TVs won't accept to 240i/p over component. So this is a cool application for those on CRTs or who know their flat screen set accepts the signal.

How is audio out accomplished? Seemed to be some confusion on Amazon about this. Do you need a 3.5mm audio to RCA stereo, using headphone port?

Also this might be a helpful review section for others regarding charger:

2. If you only have the charging cable that came with your PSPGo, you CAN NOT charge your PSPGo while you have it connected to your TV. There is only a single port on the back for the new PSPGo-style plug, so you can plug in your AV cables OR your power cable, but not both.
3. If you want to charge the system while you're playing, you'll need to have a 5V power adapter for the classic PSP. This can plug into the round port on the cradle while you have the AV cables plugged into the new-style port. The power adapter you'll want is something like .

I actually think this would make a cool, short article on the front page. We're looking at rebooting content. Of course up to Nick, but this fall under the "old meets new" category which is extremely popular right now.

Yes, if you still run a CRT I feel this is one of the best ways to play PS1. Otherwise you would have to get SCART cables and then convert to component I think? I bet somebody can correct me if I'm wrong.

For audio out it has the usual red/white rca jacks with the component connections, so no additional cables or adapters needed.

I don't think an article on just the PSPgo would be great, but I would like to see an article talking about portable games played on a TV in general. First talk about all of the official solutions like the PSP, Super Gameboy, Sega Nomad, Gameboy player, etc.

Next mention all of the newer solution that have come out in more recent years like the Retron 5, that adapter that lets you play GBA on a SNES, and I think one of the other new clone systems has a Game Gear attachment.

That being said, I probably shouldn't be the guy that writes it as I would probably leave people confused.
