But that's because you've played them. Hype based on media campaigns and hype based off of an experience you've partaken in are two very different levels of legitimacy. And the hype for Ys I & II is very legitimateBoneSnapDeez wrote:I've been known to hype retro games.

Re: Games NOT Beaten 2017
I just hate that so many systems in Horizon Zero Dawn feel so half assed. It's like they thought, "Taking down big robot animals! Yeah, that's all we need to put any effort into. That'll get us game of the year nominations!"isiolia wrote:Pretty sure you don't need a Switch to play Zelda...though I'd also venture to say you wouldn't like it anyway.Juan Aguacate wrote: What a shitty game for all the hype it's getting. I guess I should be playing Zelda instead, but I don't have a Switch.
I'd say Horizon's combat is simply built a lot more around fighting machines (and ranged combat). That's where far more of the options come into play, though I can't say I've tried traps/etc on humans. Still, that's where it does things above and beyond games that play similarly. Personally, I haven't had much issue wiping out bandit camps or whatnot like some ginger ninja, but I don't disagree that close combat options are next to none. To me, that just says that it's meant to be a last resort or finishing blow. Some of the reviews did note that you wind up fighting too many human enemies, and that's probably the source of that critique.
Still, if deep melee combat is what you want, Nioh is probably still on the new release shelf, or maybe For Honor if you wanted to do PvP.
And sadly, they were right. Literally, every single thing OTHER than fighting the machines in this game sucks. Horizon Zero Dawn is a one trick pony, and once that trick gets old so does the game.
The stealth mechanics in particular piss me off. With games like Assassin Creed, Shadow of Mordor, and Batman there's no excuse for such poor, half assed stealth. It's not like you don't have enough games to copy. Aloy has about 1/3 of the stealth options those games give you. Plus, the rpg elements of the game ruin the stealth. You can try sniping people with head shots to quietly take them out with your arrows and it works on low level grunts, but not on higher level ones. I don't care if you're a badass warrior who wrestle alligators for fun, an arrow in the skull should still kill you. I hate when games do contrived stuff like that.

They really aren't though. Not a lot is really new, and plenty is not as complicated as it could be, but I would say that's intentional. It creates a big world for players to explore, and does very well at guiding them around it. For an open world game, it does a great job at pacing content and making things convenient (inventory gripes aside).Juan Aguacate wrote: I just hate that so many systems in Horizon Zero Dawn feel so half assed. I'd say there's a lot there to enjoy if you aren't hung up on what it's not. It also, for example, bears some resemblance to more RPG-heavy games, but almost entirely lacks actual player choice.
Plenty of (if not most) games do prevent you from just one-shotting every last enemy from a distance. Usually by introducing heavy armor units and/or having enemies adapt to your playstyle by wearing helmets. HZD gives you upgrades for hidden strikes to kill "boss" level humans, use runes for more damage, nock multiple arrows, reload faster in bullet time...or just in general is forgiving enough with stealth (when wearing stealth gear, at least, which is what I've used) that a follow up shot or three is easy enough to get in.
On the one hand, a lot of what's in the upgrades would be nice to have as basic mechanics...but on the other, it does make the majority of them noticeable, meaningful things to unlock via a very straightforward system.

1. Test Drive 4(PS)
2. Fear Effect (PS)
The inventory system is just garbage as well. It took me like 5 minutes just to figure out how to save and I was shooting my gun the entire time.
The graphics and story look cool, but that is a game that has not aged well at all. Only pick it up if you are a DIE HARD RE/Survival Horror fan. Ugh, that was pretty terrible.
I completely agree with Xeogred's post!
2. Fear Effect (PS)
Oh My God, those are some of the worst controls I have ever played. The little bit of original RE Tank Controls are so much better. But, not only that, they expect you to do stealth with those tank controls. Enemies were killing me so quickly and I wasn't even hitting them with my gun.Xeogred wrote:I ended up watching LP's of Fear Effect 1-2. The graphics are cool and all, but the controls are absolutely horrifying. And I say this as someone who loves the RE tank control scheme. In Fear Effect it's more complex because you have to roll around and manually aim more, all the while the game has some weird health regeneration system with no pickups. Lots of backtracking and weird ass puzzles, goofy stories. Once I finished up the LP's I was glad I didn't try to play too far.

Haha, true story but I only got about 5-10 minutes into the second game. I literally could not get past the very FIRST enemy encounter. There was like three robots that pop up out of nowhere and completely surround you, so you have to try and duck to dodge them and manually aim taking them all out, except they kill you in seconds.
I at least made a lot more progress than that in the first game, but yeah.
They're making a third game I think via Kickstarter and it looks like a completely different style of game, maybe top down or something. I have no idea but anything is better than how the first two play.

1. Test Drive 4(PS1)
2. Fear Effect (PS1)
3. Grand Theft Auto (PS1)
It took me several tries to beat the first mission, so I saved and turned the game off. I went back to it the next day and I was back on the same mission. After some searching, I found out that there isn't a traditional save system.
Each city is one large level with all these missions available to you. The more missions you do along with the more mayhem you do will cause your points and multipliers to rise. If you die or run out of money, your money/multipliers take a significant hit.
You can only save after you have completed a city or you fail in doing so. With that in mind, I am not going to sit around and play 10 consecutive missions correctly when I can barely do the first mission.
Also, with the camera, driving and controls being terrible, I just can't bring myself to care anymore.
I really wanted to like the game, but it's just not for me. My hunt for a good 'new' PS1 game to play continues.

On second thought, screw this game!Markies wrote:Considering how much I absolutely adored and played the hell out of the trilogy on the PS2 and even played the PSP ports and the fact that my friend loved this game on the PC, I kind of feel like I have to play through the original.

My friend who adored the game loved it on the PC and hated the PS1 port. I'd be very curious to hear if the PC original was much better in regards to the game. There are a ton of good and unique ideas in the game along with it being nostalgic to go back to the original, but I just can't do it. I grew up with the GTA3 games and I just cannot go backwards.fastbilly1 wrote:GTA2 fixed all my issues with GTA1, and added in an excellent multiplayer on PC. Try out GTA London after you finish GTA1. It was a very interesting way to take the series.

It's cool man, nobody cared about this series until GTA3 anyway.Markies wrote:I grew up with the GTA3 games and I just cannot go backwards.

I don't know why I bothered looking at list. There wasn't a single entry on it that surprised me remotely. I should'a remembered that Exhumy Senpai wears his hobbies on his sleeve

I really wanted to like Vagrant Story. I tried playing that game for a long while, but I just couldn't get into it. The different types of weapons, monsters only being able to be hit by certain weapons and the weird battle mechanic was just strange.Exhuminator wrote:
Considering it is part of the Final Fantasy Tactics 'universe' and made by Squaresoft, I had seriously high hopes for it. I think if I spent several hours understanding the game, I would enjoy it better. But, it is not easy to get into and I got lost very quickly.
I still have a couple of Unfinished PS1 games left. The one I am looking forward to is I found a copy of Tales of Destiny. It is my first Tales game, so I am super excited to play that one!
Re: Games NOT Beaten 2017
Tales of Destiny... has the most insane encounter rate ever. I only got a few hours in that one.
