I dislike Assassin's Creed because it basically killed Prince of Persia, but whatevs.

Rayman Legends was phenomenal, as was Child of Light. I'd especially love a sequel to the latter.

I never did get CHild of Light, but I do agree AC killed off the better Prince. :(

Not implementing a manual save system.

If you've played enough games over the years you know that devs can't always be trusted to put check points where they need to be

I don't trust devs, so let ME decide when to save

Or a rarer variation of that: A death on the final level or boss means permanent game over.

Both of those. Rastan does this, and it sucks. So does the arcade Rygar.

SO MUCH YES!!! Wii games (and to a less extent Wii U games *cough* Star Fox Zero *cough*) have such a problem with this. LET ME REBIND THE BUTTONS, DAMMIT! There is no reason that there can't be SOME alternative control method around your gimmicky bullshit.
Tanooki wrote:But really of all things, sequelitis aside, I think one of the most damning things Ubisoft has done was force an online connection on PC/Console games for single player titles just so they can spy on you in the name of verifying you paid for the game. I haven't bought a game of theirs in years because of that outside of the DRM/spy free Rayman titles up on GoG.
Also SO MUCH YES! There was that deal recently on that bundle of free Ubisoft games on PC. I was fairly interested, but as soon as I saw that it required the use of any kind of Ubisoft online service I went straight in the opposite direction and promptly forgot about it

Miscellaneous things others have mentioned I'm also annoyed by:
Bosses and enemies who can do shit you physically cannot in games (like firing from behind cover, Mafia II!)
Really unforgiving checkpoints for no reason
Not having infinite lives when you have infinite continues in a game not inherently based on score (Banjo-Kazooie's weirdest problem, imo)
QTEs in games not inherently based around them (like Heavy Rain or Asura's Wrath). Like, when I saw that I didn't have to mash a button to open a stiff door in Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, I was shocked. SO many games love doing that.

Things other people apparently don't like that I tolerate or don't mind:
Boss Rushes: They force you to really learn the bosses' patterns and not just bullshit your way through them. I can see why people would prefer more new content instead of them, but I'm not so against them in principle.

One I don't think anyone has mentioned yet: Multiplayer-focused games that unnecessarily gate off a TON of content behind dozens of hours of single-player only gameplay. There's a certain value to be had with having your single player content teach the player how to play most optimally for the multiplayer component, but especially in local-multiplayer only games, this is ridiculous! If I just wanna play with my friends, or god forbid learn to play the game at the same pace as my friend with only one copy of the game between us, why should I have to play through dozens of hours of content, outpacing my friend, in order to play 2/3rds of the fighters in a fighting game, or half of the cars and/or tracks in a racing game? AT LEAST put in some kind of cheat code so people can get around the gating!!!

Yeah you're tolerant for sure. I hate boss runs too, especially lousy ones in the back end of an RPG to instill a false sense of unnecessarily added length. Tales of the Abyss did this and as much as I loved pushing through it on 3DS I quit on it and never actually finished the game as I got tired of it over that.

...and same here, I ignored that Ubisoft gimme, and for years now EA desperate to get people on their super intrusive spying Origin service throws out some pretty heavy hitting freebies. Each time I look to see if they're not on there, and when they are, I don't bother. The non-money price of admission is too high.

Boss battles

I don't know about the rest of you but if there's one common thing I notice in a lot of modern games is that nobody knows how to design boss fights anymore. I'm playing Infamous Second Son right now and just rolling my eyes at how shitty the boss battles are

Generally, you can expect one of two things from boss fights in most modern games. It's going to be:

A) Tedious. Oh great, let's repeat the same pattern for the 100th time as I try to whittle down this boss's 300 hundred health bars

B) Cheap and annoying. Oh great, let me enjoy fighting an enemy that can break all of the game's rules and do a bunch of stuff I can't do. Or an obnoxious boss that spends more time hiding behind minions than actually fighting you

I remember in a lot of older games, boss fights were this awesome thing to look forward to. It would be one of those cool moments you wanted to show your friends. Now it's something you dread, and honestly I often find myself wishing modern games would just abolish boss fights all together since today's game designers just aren't creative enough to actually come up with any that are actually fun and memorable.

Boss fights today feel like some mandatory thing on a designer's check list that just gets shoe horned into most games because people think games HAVE to have them and not because they actually add anything to the experience.

Some modern boss battles are great, but I agree that WAY too many have gotten crappy/lazy. A boss needs to be more than either an ENORMOUS amount of health.

I'm just glad some games still have boss battles, because it actually seems rare thesedays. Especially last gen when GOTTA GET ULTRA REEEEALISTIC.

Or games like FFXV really fail to convey the feeling of THIS IS AN EPIC BOSS! I never really got that vibe anywhere in the game.
