MechWarrior 5 is a thing again.

Post by Gunstar Green »

So MechWarrior 5 is back in development, but it's by Piranha Games the people behind the divisive MechWarrior: Online.

I have mixed feelings, but this is early footage so I'm trying to hope for the best.

Gameplay looked rather old school (as in not innovative), but still something I'd enjoy out of nostalgia.

There wasn't enough "oomph" in the weapons for me, but this is an alpha build so I'm holding most of my thoughts until we see something more substantial.

Some people may disagree but I'm glad they're going with mercenaries again. It allows for more gameplay options and gives you an excuse to mess with more of the Battletech universe than being tied to a particular faction does.

I hope they remember that when the mechs are blown up they're supposed to explode in a small nuclear reaction, not just a fiery poof.

There's a bunch of people in the Battletech community who will cut you for that comment.

Haha, yeah. People are still sour about MechWarrior 4's handling of it, 16 years later.

They should cut themselves for not using "Optional Destruction Rules" of the Battletech ruleset:

"Case #2: Engine destruction, fusion explosion

In this case a 'Mech has suffered sufficient damage such that the
fusion power plant of his 'Mech explodes. This has the effect of a small
nuclear explosion (well, it IS a fusion engine!). The damage that is yielded
in this explosion is EQUAL TO the engine rating of the 'Mech whose engine was
destroyed. The further away other 'Mechs are to this explosion, the less damage
they will take."

As long as they let you defeat/disable mechs multiple ways. The biggest issue people had with 4 is exploding your opponent was the only way to defeat them.

But as Deadeye taught us up MW2: Mercenaries you should always, "Kill the meat, save the metal."

Don't think of it as people you killed. Just think of it as a line on your resume.
