I think it's because the Kirby games are easier to make. I haven't played the last few but if I recall, they really aren't as co complicated to plan out and make compared to a 2D Metroid.
No need to plan out a map guided by item unlocks and the art for a Kirby game is less complex. There isn't any story to speak of so no need to worry about canon.

Re: Metroid 2 Remake AM2R Released!
Yes it is true that Metroid doesn't do well in Japan and Nintendo is Japan first ignorantly still to a fault. I'm happy they are in game development as they're not another 21st century me-too shop, but they take it too far and bury things that don't need to be. Metroid sells worst there so it gets under the rug, much like the non-statement of a 30th anniversary but being all over mario, zelda, and kirby like a cheap suit.
I knew this would happen, said it in page one here, downloaded it as the c&d was coming. I'll get to it, if anything out of spite. It makes sense they did it, they own it, don't want others playing in their pond, and you can't sick(pay) lawyers to attack every two bit project when most fail to finish.
Projects we can say easily like this should be encouraged and help to grow, perhaps end up as a download or physical piece of media to prop up their house of mascots, many companies should consider it. Think of the potential hoops you know, like how Mother 3 was handed to them, even Tomato said go for it, and they didn't. They don't want it (many 'they''s) unless it starts and is pitched to be under their control and this damn well wasn't. What makes it sting more it was LONG demanded even before this project came about since the map was just added a game later and stuck around.
It is what it is. That's why I think it was best these guys did handle it how they did and it's the way I keep saying projects should do it to side step these douchy companies. Say nothing, or if you do, set a date, time, and MANY download hosts, and make it clear when it is up. It's the internet, shit doesn't vanish, you can't erase it like some gov't spook would do it a person if they wished. We all have a copy, tens of thousands or more copies are out there and spreading. The more this shut down story gets about more people will say fuck Nintendo and host it, advertise it, it will work against them as it will be everywhere and they can't do shit to the creator or the hosts to stop it as it will continue to get handed around. The maker still wins. They can keep the site up, keep the tech support up, help, converse, be a community around it, they just can't host that full game download...but they can't stop others from being generous.

And well said on Popo, just read that and it sounds like (if I didn't know better) Nintendo got intimidated by someone who knows how to handle their own franchise far better than they can anymore which is fairly sad.
Re: Metroid 2 Remake AM2R Released!
It's not intimidated. This is a normal, expected reaction from a company that owns some IP. We're all disappointed because we enjoyed the end product and we aren't being served by the owner of the IP. But it's a perfectly reasonable thing for Nintendo to do.

Regardless of the extremely disappointing but understandable DCMA takedown, this game is awesome. This team should go work at Way Forward or start a company and kickstart an independent title or something, because what they produced is stellar and one of the best things I've played this year. I would gladly donate to them to fund an independent game, as they've demonstrated an understanding of lot of good design fundamentals.
Terrific game, really scratched an itch.

THIS IS SO FREAKING GOOD
84% and 4 hours so far. Taking a snack break.
There are some pretty tricky Shinespark parts for a few items. So far there are two spots I don't have a clue on. Is there a full map available anywhere? Maybe I can circle them and show others here if anyone got 100% yet.
I definitely like this more than Fusion. It evolves a lot as it goes and really stands on its own two legs. Damn good in every single field and so many subtle nods to other games with some locations, some of which I'm guessing might be new, but I don't want to spoil anything.
This is seriously like the best videogame remake I've played since... Zero Mission and REmake.

The reddit for AM2R has a couple of 100% maps; one is just a screenie of the in game map, the other I think might be annotated (but I didn't click it to confirm).

Beat it, the final stretch almost made me teary eyed.
Ended at 88% with 4:39.
Gonna have to look into these two weird spots, but I figure there's 250 or 255 missiles and I only had 230. Not sure about super and power bombs.
