Also on August 6th, a few days ago, Metroid hit its 30 year anniversary. Did Nintendo do anything to notate it, any fanfare?

Is this real life?

Better nab it now before Nintendo issues the C&D.

Been waiting for this for quite a while. Looks like I've got one more Metroidvania to try and get through this weekend.

I for one can't really get into Metroid 2. The lack of BGM in a lot of areas, colors, and the gigantic sprites, and the weird slow morph ball wall/ceiling navigating kind of ruins it for me haha. But this looks incredible and a cooler way to play 2.

So I'm midway through Area 4; I took a bad spill into lava, had nearly no health left, ran into a Gamma Metroid, retreated, but got killed trying to get back. Unfortunately that means I've lost some decent progress.

So the first thing you'll notice is this game is much harder than the original. Many enemies have new, more aggressive patterns. There are more bosses beyond the Metroids and Arachnus. And the Metroids are far harder to kill. Rather than just nailing the Alphas and Gammas anywhere you now have to hit them on the blobby part just like the Zetas. And the invulnerability time is just long enough that you usually can't just string together several missile hits. The game tosses a ton of missiles at you as usual, but this time you're actually going to need them all in between save stations.

The game's also added in some later powerups. You start with the power grip and the speed booster and super missiles have definitely been ported. We'll see what else has come over. Exploration wise the game takes the systems from Metroid Zero Mission of the map that fills in circles when you grab the power ups hidden in the area. The areas have been redesigned a bit to both actually fit in a single map (the original Metroid 2 map can't be constructed into one giant one like all the other games) and to have some more puzzles or take advantage of the new items. It still all feels familiar. It really does feel like the same treatment that Metroid Zero Mission did for the original.

Not sure if I'll play or get around to it with paid stuff I have, but that said I'm downloading it in case Nintendo wants to C&D this since they're not competent enough anymore to do a Metroid game of this style it appears.

What a load of bullshit. It was admittedly too predictable and going to happen. But this project has been running for YEARS and the blogspot has had quite a lot of coverage off and on, tons of activity with hundreds of comments, etc, it's not like this was some underground secret. But of course like always, publishers are going to wait until the project is completely done and then bully them? It's such a dick move. And happens all the time. Ugh.

I don't want to get into a huge tangent but I feel like since Gunpei's passing Nintendo has treated Metroid like an accidental success story. Sure, they slap Samus into Smash Bros and other things like, we might get a new game every two generations or something, but I've just always gotten the vibe they really don't give a damn about the franchise and dislike that it has a fanbase. Who knows how much convincing Retro had to do to let them do a full trilogy with the Prime games, that's just a flatout miracle that happened. I'm all about big franchises taking their time and not being over saturated, but with Metroid it really feels like they clearly try to keep away from it more than anything.

Anyways yeah, skimmed Popo's review and it sums it up. It's incredible from what I've played so far and I already like it more than Fusion, lol. So I added it to Steam, first time I've done the shortcut/non-game Steam thing, and starting the game in Big Picture mode with my X1 controller in, everything was perfect from the first launch. All I did was put v-sync on and that was it. It looks amazing, plays amazing, it optimized well, sounds amazing, hot diggity it's freaking cool and feels like a legit release in a world where Nintendo cares about this franchise.
