Is Xbox LIve required?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Matchmaking in what sense? I haven't played any laggy games on PSN, if that is what it refers to.

Basically matches people of similar skill with you. It promises that I won't get my ass kicked by a 14 year old at Gears 2. Of course, I still get my ass kicked by 14 year olds at Gears 2.

Not at all, I was referring to both the way it places you against similar skilled opponents and the party matchmaking that let your group stay together game to game. Both XBL and PSN work pretty well with the latency matchmaking.

Lets keep the subject at hand here please. This isn't about online multiplayer.

You will get banned if you get caught.

Unfortunately i think yes, you wont be able to access XBOX Live at all. However i am not 100% sure, i think that's what i read in xbox-scene. You might want to take a look there if you want to know for sure.

However since you don't care about gold and online multiplayer, and all you want is DLC, demos and that stuff you can greatly minimize the risks of getting banned by doing these things.

1) Only connect to XBOX Live when you want to download stuff and the like. Do not play your backed up games when you are connected to Live regardless if you only playing single player. Completely disconnect the cable and not just sign out.

2) Create proper stealth patched backups. A recently released tool for that purpose is ABGX 360 (last version 1.0.0)

That does not mean 100% protection but you must be really unlucky to get banned by following the above.

Also i just remembered a forum that the members there, upload demos for 360 games so people who are banned from XBOX Live can burn them to discs and play them. So yeah, i am almost sure that if you get caught you will be banned completely.

You will not be able to connect to xbox LIVE at all with that console (your gamertag does not get banned, however)

That is only if his get caught, a modded 360 can connect to Live Gold and Silver just fine, with no limitations.

Edit - And i just reached 69 posts! Whooo! Yeah!

Ok i am immature some times...
