Destiny is very much a 16-bit RPG on the PlayStation. Graphically it's a minor upgrade on Phantasia and the story was actually one of the more straightforward of the Tales games as I recall; not much in the way of moral ambiguity. Eternia/Destiny II (not to be confused with the story sequel to Destiny) is when they started to flex the muscle a more powerful machine gives them, but I'm not very far into it, so I can't comment on it much.
I mostly missed the more controllable AI (what to do given certain HP or MP level situations) and the Skill system. Skills added a lot to how you went about approaching certain combats. Given that it also took time to learn certain skills and you could only have so many skils equipped that weren't on the weapon you currently had, it also gave pros and cons to using what would otherwise be a bad weapon a lot because it has good skills.

The lack of those elements was my best guess on why Symphonia just kinda bored me (I don't think I quite got to the second disc again :( ). I don't think it was the story, although I guess it could've been. I reaaaally liked the characters in Vesperia, and especially the dynamics between them (extra especially between Yuri and Flynn). Symphonia had a cool setting, but the characters just didn't grip me so hard I guess. I still have trouble on putting my finger on exactly why I can just never finish that game :/

The 3DS version of Abyss is the only other one I've played, and I beat that one not long after it came out. I remember enjoying it quite a bit, but I also remember feeling that the fact that it was portable being a big reason why I could finish it (easier in smaller sittings). To be honest, though, it's been so long I honestly can't even remember that much about the game.

So just FYI, Symphonia does have a skill system, with combinations being unlocked if you use certain sets of skills.

I've got about five or six hours into Dragon Quest IX now. Finally made it far enough to generate my own party members. I went and defeated the Wight Knight, now seeking a nursery rhyme or some such silliness.

Still waiting on this DQ to get its hooks in me. I've been having to force myself to play it, which is never a good sign. I definitely enjoy the strong visual aesthetics and nice music, but the meh plot and lackluster scenarios have not excited me so far. (Also not happy with the frame rate issues when you have a full party following you around.)

I'll play DQIX some more tonight, but it really needs to click with me soon, or I may have to consider moving on.

It took a while for it to get its hooks into me, too. And you know how much of a Dragon Quest fan I am. It develops very slowly.

I know that Dragon Quest VI came out in a similar time frame, and for my money, it was the better game.

I started Tales of Graces f today. The main characters are soooo cute! What with their innocence and babby-level of romance and worldviews. This seems to be a bit of a simplified game system compared to what I'm used to, but I'm enjoying it so far.

No kidding X3

Played a bit more.
That part where it hits you with the one two punch of Sophie dying and then how mean Asbel is to Cheria, that was a really deep moment for me. It's usually a game has to get all the way to the end to nearly make me cry, not only like 3 or 4 hours in ;A;

Loving the characters and writing so far. And I think I'm finally getting the hang of the weird combat system in this one. It's taking a lot of getting used to having to manage CC-time-units for normal attacks and basic attacks. Definitely digging how this game uses skills though. Finally makes Titles do something other than occasionally change your costume.

Still working my way through Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst. Been doing this on-and-off for months. Since the game is split into small chunks it's easy to put down for awhile and then come back to.

I'm nearing the end of Episode II. Love the new scenery and music. The game's getting a little "cheap" though. There are way too many flying enemies that are hard as hell to hit. And the booby traps. Oh how I hate those. The "trap vision" item seems to help identify the hidden ones. Some at them at least. For like 30 seconds.

Last boss I fought was some giant griffin thing. Similar attack pattern to the dragons bosses. Went down pretty easily. I'm at level 62 or so right now.

I put Dragon Quest IX away for now. Don't get me wrong folks, it's a quality game, and I plan to someday play through it. I just wasn't presently in the mood for Dragon Quest as it turns out.

So yeah the only RPG I'm currently playing through is Sorcery! 3. What an amazing game this is. If you took a WRPG, a game book, and a D&D campaign and mixed them all together, this is what you'd get. Such a deep and open ended experience, this. Very awesome. But I wouldn't recommend playing Sorcery! 3 without having played Sorcery! and Sorcery! 2 first. Some screenshots and links:

For some reason I've been thinking you've been playing Wizardry 3 this entire time, and was a little surprised at how much fun and progress you were having Xp
