Yup. If I remember right, this is also around the time they ported Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, which was also nearly arcade-perfect. They were really on a roll there for a while. I had a six-button controller and everything. :)

Also, Guile's theme goes with everything:

While the first game on Genesis is arguably skippable (I happen to like it, but many don't), X-men 2: Clone Wars is awesome and you should give it a shot.

While not based on famous comic book characters, this just feels like a comic game should.

My picks for some decent games
Punisher ps2
Xmen legends 1/2
Marvel ultimate alliance
Spider-Man dreamcast
Hulk ultimate destruction
Batman returns snes
I do have a question though is hulk ultimate destruction and sega's Incredible Hulk the same game?

I loved the first X-Men game on Genesis. I haven't played it in many, many years. But I know I enjoyed the heck out of it then. The animations were great. Wolverine and Gambit looked so awesome.

Played the shit out of X-Men on Genesis when I was young. Loved it. Really stylish music and graphics.

Sunsoft's Batman on NES is solid.

Spider-Man and Superman on 2600 are amusing.

There are tons more I'm forgetting. And I don't think I've played a post-16-bit superhero game.

Ya know, I was curious about Disney Infinity for awhile but I wish there were more Frozen characters...

Glad to see others mention Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. I have the GameCube version, and it's one of my favorite super hero games. Combat isn't too deep, but has many combos to unlock and discover. The running, jumping, and climbing all feel really good. Story isn't going to wow you, but the game just feels so fluid and empowering when you play that it's worth the effort. One odd note: there are all kinds of optional missions hidden around the city that you can try. Loading time to get in and out of these extra missions kind of sucks, but some of them are very challenging and fun so they provide a great break from regular gameplay. I particularly liked the "golf" challenges.

X-Men Legends 1 and 2 are also great games. They remind me of Gauntlet-type gameplay, but with RPG-like leveling up for your character. These games also seem to be consistently very cheap to find, so are great pick-ups.

The Marvel Ultimate Alliance games that were released later are supposed to be very similar - but I've never played myself so can't confirm.

The NES Batman and Batman: Return of the Joker games are fantastic, and some of the best early examples of superhero games. Both have tight and challenging play, but ultimately feel fair and balanced at the same time. Highly recommended if you find them - unfortunately I don't think these tend to be as easy to find these days unless you are just emulating.

Now for my guilty pleasure:
I really enjoyed Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six for NES. This game isn't very popular, and modern internet reviews absolutely bury it - but quite frankly a lot of those reviews are AVGN nerd rage BS instead of meaningful commentary. Controls were tough to master and didn't behave the way you might expect, but were consistent if you bothered to learn them - and once you understood how the game worked you could do some cool stuff with web swinging in particular. The boss enemies were pretty well done, all things considered, and great representation of some classic spidey foes.

However, I don't recommend this game to anyone unless you have a weird passion for old-school, slightly jankey NES titles. There are clearly better Spider-Man games on the market now, and they will be better experiences for most people.

Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is an amazing game. It's like playing Grand Theft Hulk. You basically run around a city causing mayhem. I'm pretty sure there's a story mode here, but I wouldn't know what the heck it is. I have way more fun smashing everything in site than I would following a story. Last time I played, I picked up an ambulance and hurled it at a helicopter, knocking the helicopter out of the sky.

Edit: By the way, this game sounds great connected to a stereo system. That deep bassy rumble when you smash stuff is doubly satisfying.
