DC, Marvel & comic book video games: The Thread!

Post by noiseredux »

alright so there are a LOT of comic book themed games out there. So how about a thread where we talk about them? What's good? What isn't? Which ones are overlooked and forgotten?

I'll start with a few random thoughts...

1. I've dabbled a bit with Spider-Man (2000) lately. I found this one at a yard sale if I recall correctly? Anyway, it's pretty awesome. There's a lot of voice acting and some great guest appearances. I believe this was built in the same engine as the Tony Hawk games were? (Remember, Spidey was a unlockable skater).

2. Y'know, I had been somewhat tempted to get into Disney Infinity as it would combine gaming with an excuse to collect some Marvel and Star Wars miniatures. But now they've gone ahead and cancelled it, which is kind of a bummer. Anyone played it - especially the Marvel stuff? Is it still worth looking into now that they'll be no new content?

3. Has anyone played the new Lego Avengers game? Personally, I'm getting sort of burnt out on Lego games lately. Don't get me wrong, they're always fun and charming, but after a while it feels like the actual gameplay is just boring.

4. Did y'all hear that Injustice 2 has been officially revealed?

I've been reading a lot of 1980s X-Men comics lately and it's making me wish there were more oldschool X-Men games that were good. I *want* to play the ones for Sega Genesis but they apparently aren't all that good.

X-Men: Children of the Atom is pretty great but Magneto is way too hard.

I have X-Men Legends for Gamecube. I'll get around to it at some point and trust that I'll like it. But it looks a lot less colorful I'd prefer.

So aside from the NES Batman and the (relatively) recent Deadpool which I have and love, what are some comic book games that yall would suggest for someone who gives zero fucks about comic books and super heroes? Like I think the lore is interesting and all that, but I don't care nearly enough to read the comics or sit through the movies or whatever. A good game, however, I can appreciate regardless of the source material.

@Nemoide @ElkinFencer10
Xmen Legends...just do it. Fantastic action rpg that's multiplayer, and you need no lore knowledge for it.

X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge is a pretty good game. Its MGS stealth and God of War style fighting. Plus a decent story and bonus Mark Hamill voices Logan.

I'd go with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while we're on the X-Men tack. It's a bit like God of War / Devil May Cry, and waaaay more fun than you'd think given the movie. It's also ridiculously violent. Like, what you'd expect if Wolvie, you know, actually slashed dudes in half and stuff. Jumping from goon to goon taking them down never got old.

I'm actually rather partial to X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, but it's a very, very tough game. I'd probably recommend Marvel's War of the Gems first, since it's not nearly as brutal.

All the Arkham games are good. All of them. I still like the first game the most because of how tightly designed it is, but all the others are fantastic as well. Just... stay away from the PC version of Arkham Knight.

When I was in elementary and middle school I was really into comics. I got out of comics in high school, and nowadays I don't care about comics at all. (Not that I look down on them in any way.) Despite that, post high school I've played some great comic hero games. Here's a few I remember:

There are a LOT of great super hero / comic book video games though. It's a genre that's easy to translate into gaming.

Just the one. ;)

Children of the Atom is indeed a good one. I remember playing the PC port quite a bit, which was pretty darn near arcade-perfect.

Also, if we get into other fighting games, and you don't mind Capcom characters mixed in, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is an absolute classic, and a blast to play at any level of skill.

More Batman goodness can be found with Batman: Return of the Joker on NES, and Batman Returns and Batman: The Animated Series on SNES.

EDIT: Oh, and while I wouldn't recommend the game itself, Silver Surfer has some of the coolest music on the NES. Follin for the win!
