Yeah, I hold both 2 and 3 in the same regard. MM2 is more classic, but sometimes the slide wins me over (Mega Man just feels handicapped without it).
MM3 was also the 1st game I played in the series.
Sometime, I'll post my "played and own" NES collection here. The good old Nintendo influenced me probably more than any other system.
How's your NES gaming going? What's your NES library like?

I guess I just don't care strongly for sliding. Sure it allows them to make tighter spaces, but I don't personally feel the need to do it unless that happens. I prefer MM2 the most over any in the lot -- best boss designs, stage layouts, use of amazing music, and the strong wily castle ramp up.

Sliding makes boss battles less challenging in my opinion. It usually very easy to just slide through and keep blasting. Megaman 2 is more classic to me, better music and stages and more memorable bosses.

An important point to remember in MM3 is that they effectively broke the robot master's weakness cycle by switching Spark Shock to Magnet Man and Needle Cannon to Snake Man. Otherwise I still find MM3 just a little bit more fun.

That's not something I'm familiar with. When did that happen?ExedExes wrote:An important point to remember in MM3 is that they effectively broke the robot master's weakness cycle by switching Spark Shock to Magnet Man and Needle Cannon to Snake Man. It's always been there, at least in the rental copy I played when it first came out. Even Nintendo Power's coverage on it didn't mention Snake Man's weakness, but later on they had a chart in their Classified Information section showing how many hits of each weapon each robot master took (4, 7, 14, or 28). But in MM3 you can use any robot's weapon against itself and it always takes 7 hits (but I'd stick with the Hard Knuckle on Top Man)Sarge wrote:That's not something I'm familiar with. See, I think sliding makes boss battles more dynamic.strangenova wrote:Sliding makes boss battles less challenging in my opinion. It usually very easy to just slide through and keep blasting. Megaman 2 is more classic to me, better music and stages and more memorable bosses.
Music is about on par with MM2 for me (Wily Level notwithstanding).
But again, it was my 1st Mega Man. No one can take away the sheer epic-ness of my nostalgia.
Does everyone else's copy of the game have that minor graphical glitch on the robot selection screen (I think right above Shadow Man)?
For some reason, I think I once owned a copy that didn't have the glitch.
I use Shadow Blade on Snake Man.

Yeah my copy has that graphical glitch. I never said they don't make them more dynamic, increasing mobility options usually leads to more dynamic combat. But the options it gave you offset any semblance of a challenge.nightrnr wrote:See, I think sliding makes boss battles more dynamic.strangenova wrote:Sliding makes boss battles less challenging in my opinion. I'm of the opinion that the slide allowed them to design better boss battles (and even minor enemies and obstacles) as well. I'm pro-slide. After you play Mega Man 3 onward you feel so handicapped without it because it becomes such an integral part of the Mega Man formula.
Now a duck would have screwed things up and made everything too easy (looking at you X5), but the slide is kind of ingenious because it not only increases mobility (and thus gives you faster paced gameplay) but it can be a little unwieldy until you master it meaning you can put yourself in danger by using it recklessly which wouldn't have been the case had they just given Mega Man a simple duck.
As I said in the unpopular opinions thread I like the first half of Mega Man 3. The Robot Masters and their levels are all great but it kind of goes to pot after that. The levels go from inspired to very noticeably, "we just need to get this done and get the game out." The majority of the game is a blast, better than Mega Man 2, until those Doc Robot levels appear then I stop having much fun.
For me Mega Man 2 ends up being the better, more well-rounded experience excepting the crash bomb walls boss which is the one moment in Mega Man 2 that I think is a little questionable.
Something else I didn't mention in the other thread is Rush Jet. The Mega Man 3 version is probably the most broken item ever in a Mega Man game, yes, even more than the Metal Blades. I have to force myself not to use it when it's not required as it makes the entire game, and even Dr. Wily, completely trivial.

Yeah, that's a normal glitch. Something to do with how they implemented the screen split on MMC3.
Interesting they didn't mention that in NP, but then again, MM2 also had some weird boss weaknesses. You could use the Leaf Shield on Air Man, but it was probably easier to just use the Arm Cannon. Flash Man was weak to Metal, but also weak to the Arm Cannon (just less so). And tons of bosses in general were weak to Metal. It's actually kind of insane.
Also, I just beat MM2. Because of course I did.
I still think MM2 is the better game, but I like the addition of the slide. I mean, I still loved MM9 without it, but there's a neat dynamic with it during boss fights. I think it's actually at its best when paired with the later Buster-era games.
