For the escort missions, take advantage of the doorways. Telepipes can also help in sticky situations.
Single Player, No online and No Co-Op. I'm a Warrior who was using a Sword for the beginning of the game. Now, I'm a Warrior using a Pistol and the game is MUCH easier and MUCH better. I haven't tried the boss yet as I'm only 22 and I want to be at 25, but my guide says your escort person is just completely incompetent.

And don't give up hope on the series just yet. Remember, DQ1 is basically the first JRPG ever, so it's archaic and obtuse because it is the first of its kind. DQ2 is MUCH better. You get two computer controlled characters and DQ3 lets you create your own party.
Take a DQ break, but don't give up on the series just after the first one.
