It will automatically download to your external, but you can go into the data manager and move it around after that. I think there are 3 data packs IIRC.Ziggy587 wrote:I have yet to use any external memory with the U. Can you choose, per item, if you want something on internal or external memory?

Yes. I keep most games on my external hard drive, but if I am playing a lengthy game, I migrate it to the internal memory (since I suspect doing so improves loading times slightly).Ziggy587 wrote:I have yet to use any external memory with the U. Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I'm assuming there IS a speed difference between internal flash memory and an external (via USB 2.0) mechanical HDD, but I wonder if that difference actually effects loading time to a noticeable degree.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Several games (Runbow comes to mind, although I know there were others) wouldn't run smoothly from the external drive on release. Patching might have fixed it, or not. Depends on the game. But that's enough to convince me that there is a difference, and to move any games that I'm playing heavily to the internal memory when possible.

I got a 2 TB Seagate a few years back. You can probably get a 1 TB for about $80 if you don't want a completely unnecessary amount of storage space.jmbarnes101 wrote:I need external memory for mine. Any cheap but good recommendations?

I have the 500 GB version of this:
I use it with my Wii, and it works great. However, you would need to use a Y cable if you wanna use it with the Wii U. I love the size of it, it's not much bigger than a bare 2.5" drive. If/when I get a drive for my U, I'll get one of these.

I have something similar. It is amazing, and I love it.Ziggy587 wrote:I have the 500 GB version of this:

"Unnecessary amount of storage space"? Qu'est-ce que? Like... a petabyte?ElkinFencer10 wrote:I got a 2 TB Seagate a few years back. I kid, but man... I have a 6TB RAID hooked up to my NAS that's perpetually 90%+ full and I'm often culling things I don't need off of it. I have a bit of a romming obsession.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

That's not too badly priced either, $64 with Y cable for a 1 TB, cheaper then the 500 GB one. Thanks.
