You mean SEGA?

I kid, I kid. I actually really enjoy that Shadow Tower cover art. It looks like something that I'd enjoy playing.

For the most part, I don't normally enjoy those 1st person or one character style of action RPGs. Why Kings field and Shadow Tower never appealed to me.

I liked the top down Diablo style games, but most ofteb I liked party-based or tactical style.

So what I'm saying is; I'm not surprised at that review. Most critics couldn't even stand King's Field, and Shadow Tower is King's Field with every player concession stripped away entirely. It's for madmen only.
The reviewer was probably the same guy that made this video.

I actually like all of these, though I definitely prefer my first person stuff to operate in real time with a big view of the action. It's part of the reason I find I have a harder time getting into classic dungeon crawlers, because I feel like the view is heavily obscured.

Anyway, as far as Diablo-esque action RPGs are concerned, is the Divinity series similar to this? I picked up a few on GOG for cheap over the years but haven't gotten to them yet.

Divinity series, I own most of them digitally now, but havent played them. Until Original Sin, they were mostly considered average middle of the road games at best. Some entries even worse so. Because of that, they havent been as high priority to check them out. I believe they are a mix of Diablo meets Elder Scrolls.

I don't know...The game was universally panned upon its release. (EGM gave it a 2/10; Gamespot gave it 3.9/10, etc. Game Informer, randomly, gave it a 7.5/10.) Most of the complaints I have read about it are based on technical issues (e.g., abysmal frame-rate, significant loading times to open up menu screen, low-quality textures, repetitive environments, poor draw distances, etc.) and oor design choices. It sounds like the King's Field games are significantly better in every respect., and I am interested in reading your thoughts when you dive into the game.

I guess if you judge a game by its technical merits more than its gameplay, then those things would matter. It's like reviewers back in the day saying King's Field sucks because it moves slow and has unusual controls, while ignoring everything that's awesome about it.

From what I've read and heard from reliable sources, Shadow Tower is a supremely atmospheric and wholeheartedly tough dungeon crawler. If it runs like junk I can deal with that, as long as it nails the challenge and immersion. I plan to find out this year. Gotta take a break for a minute though.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I guess technical issues matter more to some than others. I can handle poor graphics and such. However, technical stuff that affects gameplay and pacing can really bother me. Slow loading times and annoying or slow menus can really drive down an experience.

I also dont like difficulty if driven by poor or clunky controls or camera.

Ego Draconis was a sleeper hit, so much infact that Atlus picked the game up for bug fixes and a rerelease even though the game was already published.

Way more RPGish than Diablo, plus they're not random. More like Baldur's Gate knock offs. Until they went 3d. Draconis was more Fable like with the combat I think, plus the fun Dragon shooter bits.
Check out my YouTube Channel DariaPlays for super nerdy video reviews on classic RPGs and Adventure titles. Bonus: I don't suck! Pinky-swear.

The way I have heard them described was Diablo-like gameplay with Elder Scrolls type open world and adventuring.
