For many years yes Tetris was the pack-in. Around the time the Player's Choice line got invented and Gameboy got its list of games, for a short stretch (months? weeks?) Tetris got a retail release in the box. It's quite harder to find that game non-ribbon'ed as a million seller complete in the box anymore.

Eventually I recall it sold with no game at times, and others they'd pack in other goodies like Zelda Link's Awakening. Some were store specific, some were not. I also recall that Killer Instinct got a pack-in deal along side of the SNES that did it, and I think Star Wars did too for some reason.

So no you're not wrong, it came with and eventually alone with out.

Also since the Pocket was brought up, that one also was mostly sold alone, but it did get some store specific pack-in titles where it was a sticker on the box I believe too, but there were also store specific colors too (I think it was Toys R Us that got ice blue.)

The Game Boy version of Killer Instinct is surprisingly good.

I got some CRAZY good deals when the game resale shop in my town was still just a general resale shop, so they didn't know how to price anything properly. I got Conker's Bad Fur Day for 4 bucks, Symphony of the Night for 2 bucks, Resident Evil 1 and 2 for 3 bucks a piece, River City Ransom in the box (no manual) for 15 bucks. Good times. Gooood times.

Hmm... is it? When I got a GBC last year from an older couple across the river it came with Tetris and KI and I couldn't stand it. I ended up selling the game as I couldn't play it, but I could the SNES version. I mean it wasn't wacked out weird like MK on GB was but still, I couldn't deal with it.

Thanks for all the information guys! You have put to rest my doubts regarding my Tetris-less Game Boy memories.

I honestly think so. It's not the arcade or SNES version, of course, but it's remarkably smooth, especially considering the hardware, and still somehow feels quite a bit like KI, unlike a lot of other fighting game downports. I believe, just from style of play, it's one of the best on the system. (The other bests probably being the couple of cutesy-looking Neo Geo fighters on there like KoF or World Heroes 2 Jet.)

I just found out that Stardew Valley is coming out on February 26!

I have been following the development of this game for 2 or 3 years now and it's finally going to be released. I am very excited/happy about it!

(For those that don't play or follow many indie PC games, this is basically a Harvest Moon clone on PC with a lot of building elements added in.)
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Want: Games!!!

I can understand the down port angle if you ended up ever touching any of the MK Gameboy games, they're crimes against gaming humanity. Street Fighter II while missing a couple of the regulars is actually well made, very well detailed, huge character sprites, and the moves made it but it's a little slower. If you don't mind the 'chibi' look of those Takara ports of SNK fighters, nothing beats the Samurai Shodown US release or the Samurai Spirits 3 JP release (I've had SS1 do have SF1 and SS3 currently) and they're phenomenal. The Takara games are speedy, well detailed, fast, full move sets, solid conversions of the stages and audio as well as 8bit GB can handle. Mind you those are like the only stand outs in a sea of many turds up until GBC happened with SF Alpha1, that's amazing they pulled that off.

And for a happy gaming moment, I know i mentioned recently I found Minish Cap, been trolling ebay being annoyed as the $40 BINS and $20-40 price point on the Nintendo made guide, found one a few hours ago locally for $10. :D Now I must park some games and play it as I never finished it when it was new. :( (I got lost in a swamp if I recall right.)

Minish Cap has always been a fun one for me, but there's a town sequence where you're going through a ton of different buildings and whatnot that I always seem to get stuck on for a while. I actually like the Kinstones. Anyway, have fun with it!
